This may be a stupid question but how can you tell when your diverter valve is failing?

Re: How to tell when your Diverter Valve fails

you will get compressor surge and will sound like a fluttering when you let off the gas. This is very bad for the turbo, its basically the air bouncing off the throttle body and trying to go back towards the turbo. This air can try to back spin the turbo causing major turbo damage. diverter valve releases the boost after the throttle body is closed.

    really? search?

anyways what he^^ said, also you will feel an inconsistent boost every time, sometimes it'll like there is no power.

Re: How to tell when your Diverter Valve fails

depends on how it fails. if it's failing to open ^^^ is correct. if it is failing to stay closed under boost you will feel it and see it on a boost gauge.
BT/BAT build threads make me happy I have a stock turbo

^^yup but for a stock one typically the spring gets really loose and ur boost wont be consistent.

Just got REVO stge 2, 380 injectors, test pipe, fmic and dry high flow air filter but haven't been able to upgrade to the 710n yet. Drove around a bit on the way to the bodyshop and although my 5 year old stock dv held boost fine, it has a really loud flutter when I let off the gas.

lol did you not read my post? while flutter may sound cool its not good at all. flutter = compressor surge which will cause early death to your turbo.

^^some fluttering is normal, especially if it occurs while a partial release of the throttle has taken place.

Also, if you let off the gas and the Phshhhh is delayed ur DV is bad.

He is saying that he is getting a loud flutter when he lets of gas which is not normal tho. i would look into it, if you WOT and let off and it flutters then you have a problem

Re: How to tell when your Diverter Valve fails

When you let off it should go WOOSSHHH, 1 smooth blow off. If it goes WOOSH...WOOSH...WOOSH...WOOSH quickly then you are compressor surging.

that was actually harder to put a sound affect in words then i thought lol

Re: How to tell when your Diverter Valve fails

Hey guys, I've always known my DV was going bad...ever since I got the free revo trial flash a few years ago. It didn't show any effects under stock boost, so it didn't need to be changed.

But you're right, it was my first day with the tune and I only drove to the bodyshop...so I spooled the turbo maybe 3 times, that's it. Okay I lied, drove it around the night before for a few minutes, too.

Just wanted to throw out my story for everyone to know what it sounds like when the DV is going bad...cause I know mine is.

710p will go in when it's back from paint.

Re: How to tell when your Diverter Valve fails

thanks for the info guys that helps out a lot. I havent changed my diverter valve yet and I have had the car 5 years. I did get the free tune as well and everything was working great until i was near the end of the free tune, then it sounded loud when i gassed it and the engine just didnt sound right. I threw a check engine light and pulled the code but now i cant remember what it was. I cleared the code and about 30 mins later the free trial was up and the noise went away and the check light nver came back on.

You can also test the DV manually by taking it out first. Push the piston down with a socket while covering the vacuum nib with your finger. Remove the socket, and the piston should stay in the up position until you remove your finger. That's how i knew my OEM DV was failing.
