Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF OK for power steering?

Can I use Synthetic Mobil 1 Automatic Transmission Fluid in my powersteering system. I have heard a few guys use it with no problems. Obviously I will flush the existing fluid out first. I searched and really didn't find much info. My steering system is fine with no noises, just fixed a minor leak at the cooler. I think it would be a good time to flush out the system because the fluid looks pretty old and dark. If not I guess its off to the dealer for some G004 of whatever they call it, the green fluid.

I doubt it would hurt it but I would just buy the correct stuff....

Mine had a small leak at the cooler too and it drained, all of it, then pump fried. Just fix the small leak and fill with correct stuff and not have to worry about it

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF OK for power steering?

Audi recommends MINERAL based power steering fluid. Regular power steering fluid will not work nor will automatic transmission fluid. If you have filled your reservoir with anything else, I would recommend a flush with OEM or OEM equivalent mineral fluid ASAP to minimize the damage. The components and associated labor costs we're talking about here are not cheap.

If you don't use the mineral based stuff, the internals can be damaged and your system can develop leaks and require replacement.

This is the stuff they put in from the factory. I bought a bottle at Napa.

Brian, thanks for that link I will check out NAPA for that 11S.

I haven't touched the system yet. I have seen a few guys run Mobil1 ATF with no problems, and was skeptical if that would work, seeing that it is more readily available fluid at the parts store. I'd hate to add something different and see my rack leak. I will for sure order the green German Pentosin or OE fluid when it comes time to flush my system.

I run straight Mobil1 ATF after replacing my power steering pump a few years ago. No issues. Complete flush and refill, don't just dump it in.
