    Removing dried on painters tape

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone know of a good method to remove dried on painters tape? Apparently the painters tape I put on my fenders and hood to prevent from scratching has cause more bad than good. Keep in mind they have been on my car exposed to all elements for almost 7 months

Its very similiar to removing wallpaper. Its just peel a very little bit.

soak it in goo gone...good luck.

generally goo gone works, but you need to soak it for hours.

Re: Removing dried on painters tape

I would use some 3M adhesive remover, which should be paint safe, then use some clay bar and finish up with some wax and sealant.

GOOO GONE FTW, or use Tar-Sap remover from NAPA

ive used them both, and theyre the same to me...

i would also use WD-40, and douse the tape in it first, and then peel off the tape, afterwards, apply another coating of WD-40 and use a credit card wrapped in a soft rag and go over the residue that was left behind... give your car a simple wash after that use the the GooGone or similar with a dry cloth and wipe off
then give your car a nice bath and it should be good as new

remember anything you use to get it off, 3M adhesive remover or GOO GONE you'll need to rewax after as it will strip your wax. i recommend 3M adhesive remover.

Use a heat gun. Heat it up and peel away. Then use some water based paint thinner. They sell a natural paint thinner that won't harm the paint.

Vegetable oil - saturate the tape and it will soften the adhesive. much more safer than goo gone.

try those drier sheets that you use for clothing. Soak it in soapy water first, then start scrubing the sticky residue.

Re: Removing dried on painters tape

see, a while ago some dude posted a thread about getting his new A4 driven a 1000 miles or so home and the front end was taped. there were a lot of people that asked why, and i can see in that case where its a good idea to keep rocks and debris from chipping the front. but the two cars posted above i see no reason to do that. why? i dont think it looks cool or trendy at all, i think it looks horrible. sorry only imo. its like the people who leave their oversized FMICs hanging down and without grilles with chrome tubing protruding just to show it off. that looks gaudy.

Re: Removing dried on painters tape

    honestly...for me

old yellow masking tape with goo gone soaked for an hour worked wonders. i then proceeded to use my finger nail to aggitate the glue off.

goo gone reintroduces moisture into the glue and turns it into a GEL that can be taken off. goo gone should be safe for paint as long as you wash your car after.

Well genius. The TT that was all taped up was for a Halloween party at a go kart track. You were supposed to dress up your cars. The second picture posted I am sure was to leep rocks from chipping the fenders up during the long trip home. If you are going go tape your car then you might as well have fun with it.

Re: Removing dried on painters tape

If you can get some 70% or higher isopropanol (sold as "rubbing alcohol"), that might work too. Cheap and safe on your paint.

    But I'd try Goo-Gone first.

whatever you do, start with the mildest solution first and only move up when it isn't working. you may find something like dish soap and warm water takes the majority off.

use a hair dryer not a heat gun.. heat gun will melt your paint because of the high heat temp.
