i got a ticked for it a while back. the officer said something like you need to be able to see the lights 300 feet away or something.

they usually dont pull you over JUST for the tails, unless theyre total dicks and have nothing else to do. which is the case most of the time.

usually they just pull you over for speeding or whatever, then get you for tinted windows, tails etc. whatever else they can add on to make our lives more miserable

most people do it themselves or take it to a shop to get it done. its fairly simple. you can lamin-x it too. super simple and great results if done right.

i painted my own, and they came out too dark for my taste

it's weird because some cars come stock with tails that look 'smoked'...

i don't get why they'd bother you unless they're BLACKED out

I've never had a problem with it, but Im up here in Madison WI. They are tinted really dark, yet still shine through as opposed to painted. I'm not sure how well a painted set shines through.

    Re: smoked tail lights legal??

yeah i would say if you're tail lights don't glow through the BLACK then it's too dark and its just another reason for a cop to pull you over. especially at the end of the month. i got pulled over for simply not having a front license plate and pulled out everything else that was "illegal" on or in my car. i hate when they ask to open your hood, they treat you like you're a criminal. if i only had a racing license or something

    Re: smoked tail lights legal??

as others have stated it depends on where you live.
Although it may complement your ride, it might not be worth the hassle from the police.

But you do what ya gotta do

put it this way, dont do that if you dont wanna be hassled. but do it if it's worth (to you) having a SICK lookin back.

it just came out darker than i wanted. im not worried about getting hassled as much as im worried about the looks of my car. ive only gotten one fix it ticket for my tails, and i wasnt even driving the car.

    Re: smoked tail lights legal??

I am pretty sure it is illegal no matter what.

That being said, I have mine tinted dark. Did it myself, using a product called Nite Shades off ebay. Works amazingly. You get two cans for like 13 bucks, only really need one can, but it's totally worth it. You just do very thin coats to get a smooth application, so you can make it as dark or as light as you want. The taillights shine through it just fine, never been pulled over, warned, anything from cops. My tint is dark as shit too, never had a problem with that either. It all just depends on where you live.

    Re: smoked tail lights legal??

    it's not legal.

Anything that's not DOT approved = illegal.

The light itself is DOT but the sticker that covers it is not.

    Re: smoked tail lights legal??

thats true about DOT, if a car is manufactured with smoked tail lights and they get it DOT approved then its legal. It just needs DOT approval. Aftermarket mods are not DOT approved obviously.

I had my tails smoked and have never been pulled over. I did get a ticket for having a "smoked" license plate cover in a different car!
