    Service/Check Engine Light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I own a 2003 A4 quattro1.8tm. I've been gone for 7 months on deployment, when I came back I went to start my car, and when I turned on my car it flashed service on my dash gauges and then the check engine light came on. Now whats the problem? Is this normal, is it something the car does to tell the owner it needs to be serviced? Is it something that I can reset with vag com?

    Info:
My car has 75968 miles on it currently.
It was not driven in 7 months but was started every other week for ten minutes or so.
All the fluids and everything was topped off and car was prepped before I left.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Service/Check Engine Light

service light means you need an oilchange, CEL is a different issue. you can get the code with vagcom then post it here.

I changed the oil right before I left, and it hasn't been driven since. Do I need to change the oil again?

7 months is a long time to be sitting. the way these cars are with possible sludge build ups, i personally would change it.

    Re: Service/Check Engine Light

I believe the car goes by miles and time, so your car may have hit the time limit of the oil.

Hence why it says or 255 days or something.

Most likely the CEL was something that sent an error from not being driven for so long, most likely a code for a misfire or 02 sensor.

If you don't have a VAG COM, just go to the nearest Autozone, Schucks or Oreilly's and get it scanned for free. Then let us know what code(s) you get.

    Re: Service/Check Engine Light

Welcome back. Take it to Auto Zone or ask a fellow dubber to let you borrow the cable and pull codes, I'm almost sure is going to be a reset and that's it. Change your oil and filter again, 7 months is a long time for the car to just be sitting there. If auto zone doesn't want to pull the codes for free play the military card and tell them you just came back from deployment, it might work.

    Re: Service/Check Engine Light

Thanks for the advice everyone. As I was going over to a buddies house today who has VAG com My CEL dissappeared after I filled up on gas and drove for about 5 minutes. I've turned it on and off multiple times and hasn't come back yet. The word "Service" still comes up on my dash though during start up. If I change the oil will this go away?

    Re: Service/Check Engine Light

no its a manual reset. did you reset it after you changed your oil before you left? if not, then i might not worry so much about changing it again.

to reset: look in your service manual.

just kidding....when the cars off...hold the wrench button, then turn the key to the ON position(not the car on, just the key) when you see the word "service" continue to hold the wrench and hit the 0,0 button and it will reset.

Alright so I reset the Service that came up when I started the car, and then when I was on my way to work this morning, the CEL came back on again. So after work today I went over to my buddies and got it scanned. Here are the codes that I got.

    16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
    P0011 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30: Voltage too Low
    P1602 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

So what now? Should I just clear the codes and just see if they come back?

    Thanks

Position sensor, I think, If yo want to reset is on you, but I think they're going to come back regardless.

Reset service light. Change oil. Seafoam. Drive the car. If you still have a light see a dealer or service center.
