    Cam follower replacement cost

Does anyone know what it should cost to replace the cam follower on a 2006 2.0T? I want to get mine done during the last 3K of my warranty so if it winds up being bad or has damaged the Cam, I can try to get them to reimburse me. Obviously, if its ok, I'm going to have to pay.

1 hr labor should be book time

you may have to request the inspection, and pay the 1 hour of time.. but if they find it destroyed, they'll replace all affected parts for free.

    Re: Cam follower replacement cost

During my 45k service I asked my service advisor to check my cam follower (was willing to pay for it and was quoted around $100) and also brought in the TSB for reference as well as an extra follower I bought from ECS (yes I've been too busy/lazy to do the easy service and inspection on my own). I get a call midway through the day saying that everything looks fine... I asked if they checked it and he said they followed the proceedures on the TSB (checking for stored codes). I told him I specifically wanted them to take out the follower and look at it to see if it was worn. After a little back and forth of him saying if there are no codes, it's fine, and me saying it can still be worn without codes, I gave up. Fortunately they didn't charge me for running codes, but I'm still unknown as to the state of my follower... Sorry for the rant as it was pointless to the thread, but just letting you know my experience of trying to get the dealership to check it.

Mine did the same thing. Service Manager told me point blank that they won't pull the fuel pump without a code, despite my insistence that I will pay whatever labor charges to do it.

Even my aftermarket shop told me they don't check it, and don't think it is any sort of issue unless you are throwing codes. Of course they would check it for me if I wanted, and they charge 92.50 an hour, but since it is necessary when doing a HPFP, I figured I would just wait til then unless some problems arise.

    Re: Cam follower replacement cost

We should all know by now that for any warranty work to be performed the problem must be easily identifiable, either as a CEL or something visible without tearing something apart.

As others mentioned, you can always request the tech to do a visual inspection on the cam follower. If the follower is worn out considerably and warrants a replacement, then they'll do it under warranty. If the follower doesn't require replacement and is still good, then you'll have to pay for the labour, which is probably about an hour.

I ended up paying the dealer to do it for me. i don't have the proper tools to do this replacement myself (it's relatively easy from what I can see) and i could have gotten an independent shop to do this for a bit cheaper but wanted it get done sooner or later, and the dealer was able to do it sooner. More for peace of mind and knowing that I have a good cam follower that is probably good for another 80,000 km.

All in all, the price of the part and some rubber seal was about $80CDN plus taxes (got a discount through a buddy at one of the other dealers), and the labour was about 1-1.5 hours from what I can tell on the invoice.

That was my point... I originally asked my service advisor how much they would charge to pull/check it and he quoted me around $100. He wrote down on my service ticket to check the follower, but when my car was in the bay, all they did was check for codes and said everything was fine. My service advisor was under the impression that with no codes, it's fine... Which we all know may or may not be the case. I couldn't talk him into doing it (knowing I had to pay).

For these type of things, I typically get pretty detailed in what I want and ensure that it's entered in correctly on the work order. I would have had something like "visually inspect the cam follower itself" perhaps.

This would not happen to be everyone's favorite dealership in Tyson's Corner by any chance? I was considering having them check mine if I paid the hours labor, but if all they are doing is checking codes then there is no point to me driving down there.

that sucks glass. id tell them id be looking for a new dealership. this is another reason why it pays to be friendly with your dealer, and if you cant, to have a good aftermarket shop to check it. ive never checked it myself but there is a DIY floating around if you guys are a little handy.

Nope, I haven't been back to Tyson's Corner since my warranty fiasco with them... It was at Audi of Alexandria. I've definitely been happy with their service so far and it's almost worth the 2 hour round trip in traffic. My service advisor there is really nice, I just don't think he understood that there can be wear without the codes... Perhaps he was just trying to save me money or I was just rambling and wasn't clear, I don't know?

I've seen the fuel pump DIY around and it doesn't look too difficult as long as you make sure to depressurize the system. I'll probably just try to pull it and check the follower on my own in the next few weeks.

I'll be having my 75K service in a couple weeks and I plan on having them check the CF even though I ask them every service about and I get will check for codes and there are none! But I don't want to find out once my CPO extended warranty runs out that "Owe by the way we need to replace your CF and cam" I will let you know what happens?

    Re: Cam follower replacement cost

I just looked at the cost of replacing the cam follower. It was $141.75CDN. Add on $80 or so for a cam follower, it comes out to about $250CDN including taxes. I was going to get this done under warranty and guess what? I would have paid for the labour anyways as the cam follower was deemed okay albeit there was a bit of wear but nothing that terribly bad IMO.

Personally, even though the follower didn't need to be replaced, at least I know that the cam follower is good and new and something I don't need to worry about.

Note that the dealer where I purchased the cam follower had didn't have the part in stock, so not sure if this is a part that dealers carry all the time.

78,xxx miles and this was the first I heard anything about the cam follower issue. My car is now having full cut out issues and was idling strangely this morning... I am sure I am at the point where the new camshaft, pump and follower are needed for my 2006 a4. I found a kit for 634 dollars that comes with the apr high pressure fuel pump and will have my local audi mechanic or audi themselves replace the parts. I've seen estimates from 1700 to 2500, hope this includes everything.

I'm going to audi in south burlington VT today to request they fix everything for free , where I will surely be told to bug off, and proceed to have the work done at the other mechanic and you're all the first to know I will be taking Audi to court for this, the bottom line being the crappy "a" camshaft that they later updated proving that they know/knew there's a major underlying issue with these cars.

Sorry to revive a dead thread but I figured we're going to see a lot more of these cars hitting the 80,xxx mile mark soon, and it p*ssed me off.

There's a DIY on replacing the cam follower on AZ, should show up in a search.

Two thoughts - you can check and replace on a regular basis. If the cam follower isn't worn out then all that you'll be paying for is either the labour cost if you get somebody to do it and parts, how often, every 40K km should be fine. Or you can just ignore it and when something does fail, take it to Audi and have the repairs done on the cam lobe, pump and follower all under the extended warranty. The revised parts - especially the lobe and cam follower is made of a harder material from what I've read.

And yes - if the parts were replaced under warranty before and failed again, it should now be covered under the extended warranty.
