    iPhone 3Gs Integration to 2008 Audi A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just bought a used 2008 Audi A4 which has the Audi Symphony System.

It also has has BlueTooth, and iPod type adapter in the glove, and a Phone Adapter in the center console. I got the BlueTooth all hooked up and I like it a lot. Trying to figure out how to get music playing off the iPhone.

I "think" my car got this installed http://www.iamaudi.com/audi-ipod-adapter/
But I am not too sure since it did not come with the cable. argg

Is that the best way to connect my iPhone 3Gs ? I want something that will charge, control and play through the Audi Symphony system

    Thanks
    Ken

I'd like to know too. I have an iPhone 3GS and want to play music on the RNS-E. I currently have the Pro Clip with bluetooth connectivity for calls only. Kind of sucks being limited to just 2x2GB SD cards.

i have the same setup as you. i have an 08 also....maybe its the package and Iphone 3GS. I use the bluetooth for calling through my RNS-E. I have plugged in my iphone into the factory glove box adapter (i used an ipod/iphone 30pin extention cable from jablejive to make it fit). You can play the music off the iphone's playlist and control it.... it also charges (even though the iphone screen has a an incompatibility error on the screen) you wont see the song titles though (thats just our a4's ingeneral...not the iphone's fault).

I dont have the RNS-E, only the Audi Sym System. I need to look into the cable.Do you know if this will work on Audi Sympony systems
So is your phone kept in the glove all the time?

Do you have any pics of your setup?

Re: iPhone 3Gs Integration to 2008 Audi A4

it wont make a different if you have rns-E or not....as long as you have the factory ipod jack in the glovebox. I dont have any pics...but like i said...its all factory. I actually use an ipod classic so that stays in the glove box at all times. I used the iphone for music for about a week when i got my car (as per the setup i described in my prior post). The cable is just a simple ipod dock extension cable...it will work with any ipod iphone product that has the standard apple jack. There is a 6ft cable so if u want you can route the wire from the glovebox and up to the center armrest or something if u want.... having the extension cable just adds flexibility of where u put ur phone i guess.

Sounds like a limitation of the B7 audio systems.

A solution would be to pick up an aftermarket head unit or get a B8...

    whats the limitation?

    bluetooth for calling works
    charging the phone works
controlling your playlist from our headunits works (cant read titles though)

seems to do the job decently.

Ill be picking up a pioneer touchscreen navi/dvd player next year....i hate the rns-e lol

The iPhone uses a different interface protocol than what iPods use. Apple decided to switch out the 12v FireWire for a 5v USB connection and for some reason, this doesn't allow charging. This Scosche adapter reportedly solves this issue, but I've never tried it.

Same situation on my e90, which even has a special ipod package. Plays, controls, gets titles, but doesn't charge. I've forgotten and been listening for an hour or two then when I get where I'm going my phone is dead, ugh. But like was mentioned above, there is a small adapter that goes between the dock cable and the phone that allows charging.

Thanks for the reply and solution! Will definitely get an adapter.

With an adapter, now I need to figure out to get proper mounting / holder that supports this setup

Just curious, are there any ways to update the old iPod interfaces in the Glove to allow charging ? That adapter is as big as a zippo :)

Don't know about yours but my iphone won't physically fit in the glove box interface. My solution was to use an old 30 gb classic that I had laying around for JUST music and keep my phone free. As in free to charge off of a 12v cig plug cable. Good luck.

Yea i only used my iphone for music for about a week. I had an ipod classic so now that says in my glovebox all the time so my phone is free to come and go with me.

The iphone DOES NOT fit in the audi glovebox ipod dock. You have to get an extension cable. I got mine from cablejive...pricey but i dont know anyone else that makes them. I think i paid $30 for 6ft.

    Stereo BT = A2DP.
Bummer that the BT interface from Audi doesn't handle it.

Maybe new deck is needed for me.

Turn off the blutooth on your iphone. Get in your car, shut the door, turn your car on. Now turn your bluetooth on your iphone on and see if it recognizes the audi system. You have to setup the initial pairing within 5 minutes of the car turning on before you drive off. After that it will be automatic whenever u get in. This is what the dealer told me when i bought the car and thats how i set it up. Works great.

Look up enfig. The dension gateway 100 or 3oo will play music from your iphone and charge it. Its 10 times better than the audi ipod adapter. Easy to install as well. There are lots of posts about the dension gateway adapter on the forum.

I finally got my iPhone hooked up with charger enabled (via adapter).

Question: how do I STOP the iPhone from actually automatically playing. In other words, is there a "STOP" Button? I ask because sometimes I hook up my GPS to it and there are no options for me to turn music off (or stop playing music from playlist)

In fact, on the Audi Systems, I dont even see a STOP button for CDs

My Kufatec Bluetooth with Symphony II allows me to do music from my 3Gs over Bluetooth. It sounds ok but not super.

You can only "stop" on the iphone itself. note that if the ipod app is playing you can double tap the home button and it will bring up the ipod mini-player to quickly stop your song.

Really? Under what circumstances? What kit are you using?

Edit: Just saw you are using the OEM Audi kit. I haven't heard anything good about them, nor do I know enough about them to solve your problem. Maybe an aftermarket kit in my thread that was posted here earler?

my car doesn't have the MMI and I really need to get my iphone working in there. It has the bluetooth setup and the phone prep in the armrest but the only "cradle or adaptor" I found to work with armrest is in the UK and its like 250 USD. Can anyone guide me to a more cost friendly cradle?

    Thanks,

    i have rns-e and i can:

    - play music with my ipod 3gs
    - connect bluetooth
    - can't charge :-( the old iphone charged, and worked better, and was faster....god i miss that fone
    - it fits in the glove box with a little elbow grease (or if you have a lazy saturday and a dremel you can grind down the sides and have a roomier fit)

I have an ipod already in the glove and that works fine, I just want my phone to work in the car as I am on it frequently, without having to use my old blueAnt speaker. I don't know if i'm missing something here, I searched the forums and the only one I came up with is that one in the UK. Actually I haven't went to the dealer, so I will do that tomorrow.

Does the Symphony seriously still come with a cassette player? Anyway, with a tape adapter the sound is not as good, you aren't charging unless you plug it in to ANOTHER adapter (wires FTL), and you can't control your iphone/ipod with your steering wheel.

I believe my headunit is the symphony 2, double din in dash cd changer. BTW the sound is AMAZING with the cassette, as it is digitally upconverted. I can still navigate my phone book and increase and decrease volume with my steering wheel. Iphone 4 battery is 10x better than the old, so I rarely charge it in the car. I also cant stand navigating through artist through the headunit. It is retarded. Seriously.... It locks the phone its 100x easier to chose artist and song on the unit itself. Unless you have a menu system as efficient as the iphone itself integrated into the car, I'll stick with my $5 adapter and use the single wire as with your glovebox unit.

It may be digitally upconverted but it's going digital to analog first and will lose quality. I agree that it is much easier to navigate with the iphone itself, but to quickly go to the next song it's nice to use the steering wheel.
