where to buy 17mm hex bit and 12pt triple square bit?

    Hi guys,

Realized my CV outer joint boot is torn and leaking.
I am sure I noticed that just in time and all I need is to replace the boot, not the joint or the axle.

Got the CV boot kit today from germanautoparts (the brand is Rein aka CRV)
Read two great write-up in the AW tech zone and eager to start.
Needed 17mm allen hex and 12pt triple square bits so tried today one Autozone, one Pepboys, one Advance Auto Parts and finally Sears and no luck to find these VW/Audi species.

Tried to search online and not so many choices for these tools at reasonable cost with shipping either .

I just found this - could anyone confirm it would work?

Any pointers to the right B&M or online stores with quick shipping would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Yes that bit is what you need. Those are a bitch too get out though. I got my 17mm hex at Harbor Freight. They've got a set of hex sockets for real cheap.

Autozone does carry the 12pt tool, it comes in a 4 pack, that's where I got mine from. 12 bucks.

Autozone carries the 17mm allen bit. It is the same thing as a 17mm hex bit.

well, checked Harbor Freight, they have 17mm hex bit in a 9-piece set only

Thanks, guys, I got some options, I will try some other Autozone and Sears stores in my area (not quite sure Home Depot or Lowe's would help).

In the worst case i will just make another order to germanautoparts - they have both things here and I guess it would cost me around 30 bucks shipped.

Re: where to buy 17mm hex bit and 12pt triple square bit?

Any Automotive jobber " should" be able to order these. Problem is when you get a chain store that hires minimum wage people and they don't have a clue as to what they are doing.

Napa should handle KC Tools. They are one of the largest makers of Automotive specialty tools in NA. Then there is OTC Tools, Gray Tools, Westwood Tools etc etc.

My local independent store has a full selection of high quality sockets, wrenches, allen sockets, etc etc...in both Metric and SAE.

Quite frankly....I've never shopped at an Automotive jobber that didn't have a huge selection of these tools on hand.

A 17mm Hex socket and 12 point Triple Squares ( Rimac's ) are not rare items.

Re: where to buy 17mm hex bit and 12pt triple square bit?

One other tip... When you go to a Napa, Autozone or a local independant store, always look for the cranky old farts. They are usually the ones with a wealth of knowledge in there heads and can answer the difficult questions.

Once you find a good Partsman...hang onto him like GOLD!! They are every bit as valuable as a good mechanic.

Home Depot and Lowes have always had the tools I need, try calling all the auto parts / home improvement stores in your area and you'll definitely find what you're looking for.

Re: where to buy 17mm hex bit and 12pt triple square bit?

Guys, thanks all for the tips.
I liked most the one about a good Partsman :)

    Finally, I got both things.
8mm 12pt triple square bit I bought in NAPA for $7.5 and 17mm allen bit I found in one of Autozone in a 3-piece set (about $13 with NY tax).

Here is the tools photo just in sake of the follow-up:

    Thanks, AZ community!
