Which Dyno to use in the GTA?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello.

It is time to go and get frustrated by finding out what my beast is really putting down onto the road. I would like to do dyno runs before and after gutting my precat. Where should I go? Any recommendations? I would prefer a dyno with a wind tunnel, but those do not seem to exist here?

Re: Whicvh Dyno to use in the GTA?

I always go to my buddy's dyno...

    It's an AWD Dynojet.

    http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/

that said it doesn't really matter where you go, as long as you always go back to the same one.

I'm planning on going back soon with my car to see what it'll put down now that I have all my mods on.

The really nice thing about it is he has the OBD-II interface, so you can log timing, IAT, CLT, and all kinds of other stuff right from your car. Plus of course Wideband O2

I second Magnus. I've know Marco for a long time too, and he's a pro. In fact, I was going to get mine done soon too. How about an Audi Dyno day?

Re: Whicvh Dyno to use in the GTA?

besides MAHA dynos...all other ones should just be used as a reference to your mods, my opinion anyways..it's so easy to manipulate dynos to achieve higher numbers(there was a huge discussion about this over on m3post, and I mean huge...the mods were into it)

anyways, someone used to organize Audi dyno days at Magnus...after the second one I haven't seen anymore.. im guessing even if you organize one now, it won't happen till winter is over..
    Cheers!

Ultimate Racing isn't generally open to the public. Private day can be arranged.

Four Star is where we held our 'dyno days' - but the "heartbreaker" is not kind to those who think they have high HP numbers

Never used Neetronics, or Magnus, but I've heard mixed things about both. Maybe folks can PM you about their experiences at both.

No such thing as a heatbreaker. It just measures lower then another brand of dyno equipment. It DOES NOT mean it measures correctly.

Magnus and Neetronics do not Manipulate their dynos. I've known Marco from Magnus and Paul from Neetronics for a very long time. Their work is excellent.

That said if a few people are down for this, I will pass by Magnus and arrange a dyno day. I'll start a new thread. I'll be going regardless of who goes or not though.

What do you think he means by heartbreaker then? Four Star's dyno typically reads lower than Neetronics or Magnus. For people going to the dyno, unless they are going for tuning, then they are looking for #s. And who doesn't want higher #s? That makes Four Star's a heartbreaker.

I too know the guys of all the aforementioned places. Frank and Dan at Four Star, Johnson at Ultimate, Paul and Andy at Neetronics, and Marco and Steve at Magnus. All good guys. None are in the habit of artificially inflating results.

The only reason I back the Magnus proposal is that they are centrally located for a dyno day. They have a bbq as well so we could bring food and have lunch there. I'll make Steve man the 'cue since he likes doing it anyway.

exactly. Dyno is used to determine delta...nothing else...and even then it should be taken with a grain of salt.

To determine how fast your car is drive it or track it!

hmmm...I'll take that bet...! I'll say 298...and will bet you a buck for every WHP closer one of us is. i.e. if it's 350, you're 20 off and I'm 52 off, so you get $32 bucks. If it's 286 I'm 12 off and you're 44 off, so I get $32.

First, I want to know what Dyno is being used since we all know that certain dyno's are notorious for showing much lower numbers....if a Mustang....you're probably closer to the reading....if a DynoJet....it'll be closer to 330.

Yepp! I wanna go back on the dyno to see the power increase from my last mods and I know it's there because I was @ the track on Saturday and pulled a 112 MPH trap (104 mph was my last trap)

That said, I say 315whp for the RS4 on the Dynojet

I don't know what he means by it.

What I mean is some dyno's just read it differently. So it's by no means a heatbreaker IMO. There is no dyno in the world that will properly give you exactly what the car is making @ the wheels. Too many variables.

I'm just sick and tired of people saying one dyno is better then another. It's simply not true.

There are dyno's better suited for different operations (like steady state tuning, etc). But that's besides the point and we're talking numbers here, not tuning.

Re: Which Dyno to use in the GTA?

Well I am going to be doing this, either at a Dyno Day or when I have time.

    I will do three (runs).

    1.) NO modifications
2.) Gutted Precat, relocated O2 Sensors
3.) Gutted precat + the new APR tune that just came out.

I might switch 2 and 3 around depending on how quickly I can find someone that can gut the damn pipes. I also might simply skip one :)
The way the car feels right now i would say 220, I think the engine is on its way to a gunk fest again.

we'll see. Most people are stunned when they see how low RS4s dyno. They're nominally above the S4, usually within 25-30 whp despite the 80hp advertised crank difference. Remember that APR B8 S4 dyno of 321 whp? The RS4 they dyno'd the week before was 290 whp.

You should read the thread APR started about their RS4 tune. Some of the RS4 guys posted dyno results, and the numbers were stunningly low. Over the past 18 months I've seen a bunch of RS4 dynos and the numbers are always super low. It's a weird thing. Straight from the factory, I don't doubt the 420ish number. After 10-15,000km...not so much.

Re: Which Dyno to use in the GTA?

Audi has got to sort out this FSI related gunking problem, who wants cars that get progressively slower? For my personal car I am sticking with my B5 S4 until I see them trying to solve it. My wife drives the B7 2.0t, haven't heard her complaining yet about the car, and for me it always felt slow anyway and I don't drive it enough to be sensitive to any changes.

I am taking my Intake Manifold off this weekend to check for and clean up carbon buildup. While I am there going to split the IM, and port the hell out of it along with the TB's. Hoping I can put down 370-380 AWHP. Should be making 460-480 crank.

Just tune was supposed to be 465hp. Porting, exhaust and intakes shold get me another 15hp at least. Exhaust actually made a big diff, especially in tq.
