I know Castrol Syntec 5W-40 is on the approved list, but Castrol Syntec 5W-30 is not. Would using 5W-30 have any adverse affects?

Use the castrol 0w-30 it's made in Germany and is a real synthetic unlike the other two.

Nothing bad would happen but I would still go with what's recommended in the manual and that is Castrol Syntec 5W40 (or any other Audi certified 5W40)

I used Mobil One 5w30 for the first nine years I had my B5 with no ill effects. I do use 0w40 Mobile One for the last few years now though.

Would i be able to feel a difference switching from M1 5w-30 to LM 5w-40? It's getting cold here in NJ and I feel like my engine isn't running as smooth.

Huuuge difference. Lubro-Moly is the shit. i swiched to it from M1 0-40 and the differences were incredible. i no longer get that chattering sound when i first start the car. this is due to the oil sticking to the cams and everythin else. with castrol and m1 it all seeps down to the oil pan overnight and then when you start your car in the morning, all of that stuff is not lubricated for the first few seconds. it also feels a lot smoother at high rpm's

lubro moly is 100% synthetic and it is made from high quality base stock. m1 and castrol are not real sunthetics. for a manufacture to claim that it is "synthetic" it only has to be 43% synthetic or something like that. might be 38%. cant remember. also, the s4 guys and hardcore german tuners sweat by lubro moly.

it goes for about 33-40 bucks for a 5L jug of it. you can get it at napa

Exactly what i was asking. It does feel a little rough at startup, and i can't put this eloquently, but with M1 5w-30 it feels like the gears are "grinding" at high RPMs - it's just not smooth. Perhaps lubro-moly can alleviate that issue.
