Thinking about becoming and Audi mechanic

Hey I am not sure if this topic has been covered but i am curious to know what the salary is for a audi mechanic? I am thinking about taking a year off school and going to uti or new england tech. I just can not decide what i want to do with my life. I have been obsessed with cars for about 8 years and I love audis. Any advice would be greatly appreciated in making my decision. Thanks, Greg

Run away, run fast. Don't get started unless you have money to invest in tools upfront or if you are just out of high school and can buy the tools you will need over time. I work for an Audi dealership and it's great but I'm 34, have my finances in order and can afford to have a slow couple of months money wise.

The good thing about Audi owners, they can usually afford to fix their cars. Working at a dealership, you won't see too many older cars like c4 or b5 models. Mostly 2005 cars and up.

Being a technician takes money. You will spend a lot of money to make your money. But when the economy is bad, people fix the cars they already have rather than buy new ones.

ive been a ford mechanic for almost four years and have been considering the switch as well, though i do have all my ford certs, i also have all my tools. i just know how slow we get this time of year, didnt know how it was on the other side of the fence...
if you are just starting or considerin it,just remember i have almost twenty grand in tools and mst others have like 40-50grand in tools, so think about that... also tech schols are great. i cant say i would have gotten into a dealership right off if it werent for school, but i honestly think i would rather be in a more laid back proffesion.

^i agree with everything he is saying. i went to new england tech, not knowing anything. i came out knowing more but still not much. i started working at a kia dealership, then after 2 months transfered to honda where i am now. i HATED the flat rate system, and ended up becoming a service writer about 3-4 months ago.

Totally agree, I was all set to got to school in Kansas and study automotive restoration. But decided to become a marine engineer and to keep the automotive end of it on the side.

But I feel that the people that make their hobby into their profession are the ones that have figured it out. The 60 year old guys restoring vw buses out of their barn at the rate of 3 a year. To me that would be the life, doing something you love and making a living off it.

yeah don't bother, i looked at uti and new england tech, the cost is not worth what you'll be making. a kid i know went to uti and ended up working at a town fair tire as a tire changer for 10 bucks an hour. i ended up becoming a mcse in computer networking and i make a shit load more then most auto mechanics do in there first year. i still work on cars but as a hobbie and its more fun that way.
