    Door rattle FIXED!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had this super annoying rattle in my driver side front door for a long time now, but I never got around to looking into it figuring it would be hard to track down. It mainly rattled when I was listening to songs with lots of bass, or when the car was idling in gear at a stop light or whatever.

I haven't had too much luck fixing rattles in the past, but this time I kicked that rattle's a$$! Turns out it was just a loose screw behind the silver fish scale trim. Once I removed the trim I found one screw that was VERY loose and one that wasn't very tight. So tightened them up and the rattle is gone!

I bought the car with 7000 miles on it and as far as I know the door panel has never been off, so not sure why the screw was loose. But if anyone has a similar rattle, check out those screws!

Actually the loose ones on my car were the two right above the door handle/lock switch near the front of the door. I figured the problem was in that area since if I pushed hard on the door panel in that area the noise would stop.

Here's a pic that I nabbed from the B6 forum. Also note that if you're removing the door panel there is another screw that is not shown in the picture that is at the very bottom of the door panel right in the middle.

Yes, it just pop's out! Use a flat head screw driver with a rag to protect the trim. Start at the side closest to the mirror, once you get it started, it just pops out easily.

I actually didn't even need to use a screwdriver. I just started at the mirror end and got my fingers under it and pulled gently out. The clips don't seem to hold it super tight. The rear end of the trip has a different kind of clip that you don't pull straight out. See the link I posted above for details.

i found it easier to pop the trim from where the door handle is. just pull up and toward you and the whole thing comes off.

    Re: Door rattle FIXED!

I had an annoying rattle and had no idea where it was coming from either and also thought that it was something inside the door, but what it actually was is the metal plate that is affixed to the door handle on the outside. Like this:

You could actually hear it rattling with all the windows up and the radio going....pretty impressive I must say. Anyway, it was loose, so I squeezed some superglue into the bottom of it and all my problems were fixed. Just an FYI if you take your door molding off and its still being annoying

To OP, thanks for the info, I thought it was my speaker loose, eneded up being a loose 2nd screw, from front. Looks like it's the little washer behind the screw that makes the noise when the screw it not fully tight.

@nramsey & @Kahootz I bought my B7 2008 3.2 A4 a month ago. Whenever the car was vibrating, and usually above speeds of 50MPH+ I would hear this buzzing, rattling, noise that was high pitched and sounded like a speaker noise at first. I brought it to Coral Springs Audi. Their head tech took a ride with me. Confirmed he heard the noise. Said they would have to spend a good amount of time to try and find the source, but that although my Audi Factory warranty is still good till 50k (I have 29k) or year and a half, the warranty only covers noises and such for 6 or 12 months. After calling Audi USA they offered $250 towards trying to have the dealership trouble shoot and fix the problem. I gently pulled the driver side air vent out and shook it, and heard a similar sound. I returned to the dealer and they said we'll order and replace the air vent. After replacing the air vent 2 weeks ago. The noise did not go away. So obviously it was not the source. I tried searching for posts like this to find others who may have had a similar problem. And didn't find it until now. I literally ran outside just now, threw my laptop on the front seat, grabbed a rag, flat screw driver and phillips head screw driver. The rag trick helped keep the molding from scratching. I followed your notes to work right to lest. The molding popped right off. I immediately tested the 4 screws and washers to see if they were seated tightly... And... The screw / washer second from the right was very loose. I'm already convinced this is 100% the culprit. Tightened the loose screw / washer up. Made sure all the others were tight, popped the molding back on. Took all of 60 seconds. MAKES MY DAY!!! That noise sounded like an annoying buzzing Mosquito. And was totally subtracting from the joy of driving the car. A round of beers are on me my friends for helping a brother out. Cheers! Rob

My car was still rattling from the painted trim piece for the outside handle also. Easy 10 minute fix, take it off, add two small, thin pieces of anti rattle foam and reinstall the trim piece.

If your door handle is rattling get in there with a credit card or a flathead screwdriver from the ends with the handle lifted up. Slide the fastener in towards the middle of the handle. Superglue shouldn't be neccessary!

I have a rattling door trim cover as well and when I was in for the last service maintenance (purchased by original owner) I mentioned the loose trim piece to see if they could tighten it up. Simple benign request right? Well when I go to pick it up the service manager tells me that the carrier that holds the trim piece to the door handle is faulty and would need replacement which require them to dismantle my door from inside out costing me a quoted 750 to fix... I haven't been back since.

Took me about 5 minutes to do all four doors, and it was super easy, and I found at least one loose screw in each, and now I have no rattle!

I used to get rattle (since I bought it) when i would be in a high gear at low speeds and the engine is causing a lot of vibration. I thought it was normal, but I am really happy someone brought this thread back to life!

I had my exterior door handle (in pic above with arrow) fixed at the dealer about a month ago under warranty. It was just loose to the touch (not noisy). But it took the dealer over three hours for them to fix. They had to remove the door, then I guess it was just a bitch to fix. Oh well, zero dollars out of pocket for me.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I could use some guidance. I searched and cannot find a thread on my precise drivers' door rattle/crunching sound. The sound I have seems to be coming from the the back portion of my door and can be heard when the car is moving. I would describe it as "crunching tissue paper" and am wondering whether it is a wire in the door rubbing (the window regulator was previously replaced under warranty but that did not resolve the issue). It can be quieted by pressing on the trim piece or top portion of the inside of the door (above the trim piece) but that will not completely eliminate the sound.

    A few questions:
    1. For people who had the rattle described in this thread and was remedied by tightening the screws under the trim piece, were you able to eliminate the sound whenever you pushed on the trim piece?

    2. For people who had the infamous door handle rattle described here http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ht=door+rattle did you feel that the outside handle was loose or that the door sounded "cheap" when closing? My handle seems find and the door sounds good when closing.

    3. Has anyone had a similar rattle, and if so, how was it remedied?

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Can't say that I've had issue. My best bet would be to pop the door panel and see if anything looks out of the ordinary.

Just tried this today, and I found over half a dozen screws that needed tightening. Amazing. I can't wait to drive it and see how the rattles I hear have changed.

I'm having the exact same issue, will have to do this. I was happy once I figured out (last week) it wasn't a blown speaker.
