Leak in the turbo oil return line

So I got a coupon for a free inspection at my local stealership so I took my Audi in today to see what is they could find. Only had two problems, a bad power steering/alternator belt and a leak in my turbo oil return line. They say that it is the O-ring and naturally they want $130 to fix it! I was wondering if anyone knows of any write ups for such a project? I searched some of my favorite forums and found very little on the part. I understand it is at the bottom of my turbo which I imagine will be fun to get to. Has anyone ever changed the part and if so how did it go?

It's not a bad leak, they said its not an urgent matter, I assume most of that $130 is labor since an O-ring isn't more than a buck or so.

There is no O-ring but there is a gasket, you can do it yourself, it is not hard to get to.

Re: Leak in the turbo oil return line

save yourself more than those $130, stealerships will invent any problem while the car is in service mode. Take it, a couple of hours later you get a call saying that everything is fixed..."ohh and by the way, we replaced you motor because it was in its last strengths, now you owe us $5000.00" you can pick it up whenever you want."

search around this forum a bit more and you will find plenty of info covering this or something similar that will take you to the issue. Like stated before, there is no o ring, only gaskets.

I ask because I don't remember there being an O-ring on the oil outlet...but I could be wrong.

Pipe, I agree with you, I usually only use dealerships when I happen to get a free service coupon in the mail. I didn't have any lights go off, they did a courtesy inspection and that is what they found.

I had zero luck finding any info on an o-ring, I will look again but this time for a gasket. Thanks for the help ziners!

It's a metal ring. Goes into the turbo under the threaded fitting that connects the turbo to the return line.

Re: Leak in the turbo oil return line

it's two gaskets and this pipe can be a bitch cause it's really tight underneath the turbo. Just make sure you have lots of patience and swivel sockets with allen heads on them, and it will save you a lot of time.

    Good luck!

Ok, I'm gonna jack this thread here for a moment. I'm reading some of your responses about how you guys write that dealerships are there to rip people off and "invent" problem while it's in service mode, so let me fill you people in on what the dealership is all about. 1.) A dealership is catered to Audi owners who are NOT the "DIY'ers" and are'nt mechanicaly inclined so, if you guys get those free inspections in the mail and already have a bad attitude or think you can do job yourself....than don't bother coming in, your just going to get more upset when we tell you the news about your car. 2.) To say that we "invent" problems is the same as calling the service dept a bunch of liars and cheats. I take this shit personally, because, I don't make up problems on customer cars, so you can go pound sand! NOT everyone in this industry lies and this coul be said for almost any industry where liars are to be found.
3.) When a customer brings there car in for service (out of warranty), they are paying for factory trained techs, Factory parts and backed by a guarantee knowing that they have a have piece of mind when they leave the dealer. It is our job to inform the customer of any problems the vehicle that may have, big or small. They have the right to know this information because, it's there car and whether they like it or not,...at least they have the facts to make a decision to fix the car.
I hope this sheads some light on the matter but, probably not.

Re: Leak in the turbo oil return line

it did, but you missed an important point in my article, there was no service light on and i had a coupon for a free inspection so why not have them look over my car for free so i know what they think is wrong

Re: Leak in the turbo oil return line

    1) Order oil return like and gaskets
    2) Drain oil
    3) Replace line and gasket
    4) Prime turbo/engine before ignition
    5) Start vehicle

As DGAFxxx stated, there is a metal ring (seems more like a washer than anything). If that is really that all needsa replacement, you would still need to replace the gaskets (you should replace the gaskets anytime they are removed) and you can re-use the oil return line.

And the dealership thing is true. I had a diangosis from the dealership and they found problems that said would cost me around $2,000. So, I went to get a second opinion from a different mechanic, and they were not issues at all. 2 1/2 years later, and my car drives just fine. Since then, learned to work on my own car and fix any issues I have myself.

Keep searching for a diy online and when you F@ck up and break something I'll be more then happy to fix it at the dealer. " You pay what you get for ".

Sorry, but at both of the stealerships i have taken my Audi to, they BOTH tried to get me to change the timing belt because "it is showing signs of wear". I then tell them i replaced it myself 20k ago, and ask if they even looked at it. Both times this prompted the tech to go totally red in the face, and call his service manager to bail him out of his complete lie.
