it should be changed everytime. I started using the Pella oil extractor since i installed the dieselgeek skidplate since it is a PIA to drop the plate to change the oil. So needless to say i have't changed the crush washer in 2 changes; But i also haven't use the drain plug in 2 changes.

i've been looking into a pela unit just cuz i own 3 audi's and need to do a decent amount of oil changes. however, the way the oil filter is mounted on the 1.8t, i don't think i can ever get a truly clean, mess-free oil change. even with the bag around the filter as i take it out, some drips from where the filter screws in.

the 3.0 needs the belly pan to be removed to access the filter, so i need to do that anyways.

i've tried to replace the washer around the stock drain plug, but i can't get the damn washer off the plug in the first place. usually i give up and end up going to the dealer to pick up a new plug entirely.

Re: Is it nessesary to change the crush washer after every oil change????

nyteescape - I pulled the filter at the end with a plastic bag around it and i get a little mess, nothing a couple papertowels can't clean up. Last time i actually put newspaper under the filter to suck up the stuff that spilled, it worked pretty good. the rest i just wipe with a papertowel and call it good.

Our other car, the TDi has a dieselgeek plate too (bear to remove) and since it has a cartidge filter on top there is no reason get under it. The Pella works slick. pump it up and go work on something else for a couple minutes. I bought 25 liters of oil last order and 5 filters so i should be good for a while.

uhhh....change them everytime. Crush washers are supposed to be one time use. Besides, why would'nt you change them...they cost almost nothing and it's extra insurance.

Re: Is it nessesary to change the crush washer after every oil change????

all signs point to yes. if you dont you risk overtightening the bolt and stripping the threads out of the pan. if you have half a brain though youll realize that you dont need the incredible hulk to tighten that shit for you though. so i guess TECHNICALLY if youre not running in the special olympics this year you dont need to replace it, but i always do to be on the safe side. it will get mangled on there over time and be a bitch to get off when you need too. then if you put one over it without knowing, you risk leaks.

X2 on that. i thought i could get away with it every other time but its just not my luck. considering they are really cheap i would just replace it everytime. You can get the ecstuning magnetic drain plug plus 10 copper washers for about $11 (not including shipping). Thats what i am going to do for the next oil change.

Hit or miss it is, misplaced my washers and had to tighten that damned thing 3 times to stop the slow leak. Then I had no belly pan so it was easy to do and more importantly DETECT.

Other times I've reused once or twice no problems - go figure.

Re: Is it nessesary to change the crush washer after every oil change????

I've had the ECS magnetic drain plug (with 10 extra washers) on the last two cars I have owned with no problems dripping or leaking using the crush washer over again. Just be careful not to overtighten the drain plug and I think you can use it over again for quite a few times.

IMO that bit o' copper does not crush that much - because the copper is more mailable (softer) than the drain plug and the oil pan it will conform easily to the sealing surface of the oil pan drain hole and create a solid seal. But after a few times (how many...I have no idea...but more than one) of torquing the drain plug the copper will start to warp and distort and then leak.

Re: Is it nessesary to change the crush washer after every oil change????

I had the ECS magnetic drain plug and it started to leak a bit towards the end of the oil change ~5000 miles. When I tried to pull it off it stripped like a bitch and now is round! Almost a perfect circle. Great...so, I'm going back to stock. $3.50 at dealer, not bad at all. I might even buy a few at a time so I can just put a new one on everytime or every other time. Just my .02 but I think stock works just fine.

I've never changed mine in 4-5 changes, since I got the ECS magnetic one.

    Maybe I'm just lucky. :)

Just don't try to tighten the shit out of it. I've used mine about 5 times now and I don't even have a drip. It's just like the oil filter itself, a little past finger tight and good to go.
