Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so I have never had to push the fog light button everytime i get into my car to turn them on.

    Its driving me CRAZY

Monday(11/02/09) I'm going to wire my boost gauge and while I'm at it ATTEMPT to wire my fog light switch into my light switch so when the corners/driving lights come on (one click) the fogs come on as well and stay on when the headlights come on also.

Just curious if anyone else has done this and has some advice.
Or if any one is interested in doing this I will post what I did to get it done.

I tried to do this with my 2000 audi a4 but it didnt work all it did was leave my headlights on when I turned on the car, any reasons why this would be happening?

this mod allows you to be able to turn them on without the lights on at all and alows lets them stay on with the high beams. its better then the mod you wanted to do!

the one i wanted to to was rewire the switch into the light switch/stalk w/e... that way i wouldnt have to push that button any more... i always drive with my corners/driving lights on... so when i turn them one i want my fogs to come on as well, without having to push the button every time.... thats what my goal was and thats what i couldnt find lol i want to ditch the button... i wont be using my brights for awhile cuz im only getting low hids for now.. highs will come later, they arent a necessity

Cuz i like it... with the boser hood it makes it look more aggressive... u know like when you do one click on your light switch... not lights on just the one click i want my fogs to come on then and stay on when i turn my lights one... im thinkin of wiring them to the corner lights that way that always stay on when i hit the switch...

Do you get what I'm saying?

not splice... but kind of... I'm thinking about doing some sort of distrution block and giving it a thicker power source, or just taking a look at the colum and fuse box see what i can see.. ill know more of my plan when i get in there

Re: Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

    Soundspeed:

I know what you want you want to do and have thought about it myself. I believe the the pre-facelift cars have fog light buttons that "latch" (stay pushed). Our fog buttons are different, they are "momentary" and the fog light control module does the logic part.

It seems there are 2 solutions to your wish.

1 - you make the button latch, throw out the control module and convert to a simple relay, like the pre-facelift cars.

2- you make the fog light control module have a "memory", so it remembers the previous state.

I think option 2 would be easier. From looking at the diagram it appears the control module takes in a few different power signals from the headlight circuits. 1 is the main power supply for the fog lamps from the load reduction relay (via fuse 36). The others are power signal from the headlamp switch, power signal from the high-beam switch, and power from ignition switch (run/start) via fuse 5.

It is the last power input (fuse 5) which I think is important. I believe it is the low current power supply for the logic side of the module. My theory is if that is changed to be constant 12v source (30 circuit), the logic side of the module will stay powered up all the time, giving the module the necessary "memory" capability - it will remember the fog light status.

Possible downsides are, (1) I'm completely wrong and this isn't possible, and (2) this will create a constant draw on the battery. I'm unsure of how large the draw would be, but it would be there and it would have to be measured. Anyway, just sort of thinking out loud here. AFAIK, the "independent fog light mod" doesn't address this. Anyone tried this?

Re: Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

I mean worst case scenario i waste an hour or two looking at the harnesses, fuses, relays all them goodies decide i cant figure something out with out going sketchy and put it all back in untill a later time. idk if i will even be able to keep them when i go with the RS4 front and huge FMIC

I was just curious if anyone else had tried it, done it or was even interested in it

Re: Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

Just saw your other post where you said:

i want my fogs to turn on when i turn my car lol and stay on no matter what..
This is *way* easier to do then making the fog light module remember the state - or whatever I was talking about before.

First, don't worry about wiring anything directly to the fog light switch. Like I said before, it is a momentary switch only. It is an input to the fog light control module and will do you no good.

Your best bet is to yank the fog light module and make a jumper between Pin #5 and Pin #8. This will make the fog lights run whenever the key is on.

As for the running lights. Hmm, lemme look that up...

Yes, the fog light module which is behind the glove box. And by jumper I mean make a jumper wire. Pull the fog light module completely, then use a wire to jump pin 8 (power source from load reduction relay) to pin 5 (fog light load). I suppose you could hack up the harness and solder it if you like, but I wouldn't do that to my car. That is the easiest and most reversible way to do what you want. The only downside being that you lose your rear fog light (no module to control it).

For the running lights, you want just the front corner lights (no tails) to run along with the fog lights all the time, right? If so, you need to take the corner lights off the head light switch circuit (fuse 22/23) and connect them to the 75x circuit. It is slightly more involved because you can't just pull those fuses and jumper it to 75x - those fuses are used for the rear parking lights as well. You'd have to go back in the harness a bit and find where it splits front/rear and clip it there. Or you can do it right at the corner light and run your own wire all the way back to the 75x terminal (alternatively you could tap into the fog light wiring). Whichever you do, make sure you add your own fuse because you would be bypassing the factory ones.

Re: Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

Got ya... and doing that would disable my rear fogs? not that I use them that much but still kind of nice to have lol.

This is all really not as complicated as it sounds but still, DAMN lol. I just want my fog and driving lights to turn on when I turn my car on, you think it'd be a lot simpler than that. Starting to learn nothing is as simple as it should be with Audi's

I will have to take a look and see how difficult it is, I might just end up doing the fogs and just click the switch 1 click. Really that will work I am just sick and tired of having to push that button every damn time. :S Wish our cars had auto lights too, I have a tendancy to get in my car at night and just drive with my corners, I know it's gonna get me into trouble

Re: Sick of pushing fog light button!!!

If you really wanted to keep the rear fog light control intact you could. It would be a similar modification to the independent fog light mod, but it would be more like the "full-time front fog light mod". I think you could internally or externally solder/jumper pins 8 and 5 together on the fog light module, then put the module back in place. It would keep the front fogs on all the time and still allow control of the rear one as normal. I've never done it that way, so you'd have to check everything to make sure you wouldn't be shorting something out. I'd be more comfortable omitting the module and just using a simple jumper wire, though.

Yeah, Audi electrical can get a bit complex. Case in point: for the facelift B5's they added complexity with momentary fog light buttons and a new fog light module which wasn't present in the older cars. But in doing so they added 0 new features. In fact, they removed a feature - it no longer remembers the fog light status. Sometimes I just don't get it. They over complicate things for no reason at all.

Ok, I'm coming on this thread late but I think I have the easiest idea of them all, and you won't lose the reverse fog which I love!

Buy two of these wires for 2.60:
    http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...aign=postreply

And at the headlight harness just jump your corner bulb pin to your fog light pin. The best part, 100% reversible if you don't like it. More or less what you are doing is exactly how we have our city light kit designed, and that works great:

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I am a new owner of a 99 avant, and after just one day, I hate having to push the fog light button each time I turn on my low beams.

The post above seems like my answer, however, I am new to Audi's and would appreciate it if someone could walk me through the process without having to buy the wires mentioned above. Thanks!

As this thread is going again, I would like to caution against this method. Nothing against Chris, but I would not recommend it. The factory front marker lights are about 8 watts per side. The factory fog lamps are H7 bulbs which pull 55 watts per side. While adding some city lights to the circuit may be just fine (they are only 6 watts a piece), adding another 110 watt load is probably not a good idea unless you plan on running heavier wires for that circuit. You would not only be taxing the wire, but also the head lamp switch. You will certainly shorten its life if you make it switch higher current than it is designed for. This is one of the reasons most fog lamp installations use a dedicated relay. You can't just tack it on to something else and have it be okay. Again, nothing against Chris, he is a great resource here on the forums. Just wanted to give some insight if anybody was thinking about using this method. It can certainly be done with the right provisions.

lol. i think the op was pretty much asking for a way to wire his fogs to just come on when he turns his headlights on. i too like feeling like a astronaut. start car. flip fogs on. turn corners on. walk outside and tap license plate light led so it turns on. get back in. turn radio on. drive to work. hehe

I concur! Sort of like checking all systems go! I think it is because the switch illuminates very satisfyingly.

And walky talky, no offense taken. I didn't consider the load transfer, I was trying to come up with an idea. As per the OP, I just picked up a 01 and I do prefer my pre face-lift always on switch!
