    Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to get a cf trunk, but i got a beefy subwoofer and i was wondering if any one has had any expierences with cf trunks...

obviously dont want the sub to vibrate the cf and crack it... i would wrap the inside with dyno mat for a lil more durability and to reduce vibration as much as possible...

just wanted to get some more opinions before i spend $600

I would just get the trunk and sell the speakers, I personally hate bass and love the cf trunks. Just my $0.02

I doubt that the subs will break the CF, but if you dyno mat it you should be fine. I've never heard of subs cracking CF...

Re: Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

hey i love bass too (just built a new box) would maybe think about building a box if u have the power that u say u do, im running a 15 on 1500w rms and have port and sub sealed facing into the car, this keeps the sub from beating directly into the trunk.. im only really afraid that my sunroof may pop open at is raised about a 1/4 of an inch up as my sub hits (no im not bsing you :D ) would love to talk more bass with you and what sub do u have and what numbers???
i hit a 140.9db on the meter with my old box but expect better numbers out of the new one i just built.. i compete often back home and usually am a strong competitor in my class...

ALSO, for cheap sound deadening material, go to home depot, in the roofing section, kinda like dynomat or whatever but its about 7inches to a foot tall and a round roll, this works VERY well to deaden and a single roll will cover ur trunk and even ur rear deck and would recommend that... about 15-20 bucks for a roll

if u have any more questions let me know!

    good luck!

Re: Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

Fi btl :) man status... Also got a fi bl that I pushed to 1800 watts for 2 weeks bout an hour a day no problem but will only do 1500 cuz I am keeping it at 4 ohms :) got me an IA 40.1 amp :P

my dad gets free dyno Matt thanks for the tip though...

And I faced the sub toward the cabin before but at higher watts o can really tell the difference and facing the rear so to bass bounces back and is spread more even sounds better, I made a custom box for both sub, the btl's box is bigger than my dogs house (105lb boxer) and the bl has one tuned to perfect specs...

Only problem is With awd lauches and traffic hard breaking... I'm afraid to install it as I fear it will got tossed around like a rag doll back there I have been considering doing a fiber glass enclosure and removing the spare tire but I reallllly love the 12"box sounds 1000000% perfect with my sub so I might have to get something fabbed up to keep the sub/box in place

And I'm not worried of the carbon fiber splitting as much as the holes for the screws breaking lose thus creating extra vibration until the eventually crack enough for the screw inserts to fall out and being stuck with a cf trunk that doesn't seal!

This is why you bolt it down to the trunk floor. You never, ever want a box just sliding around. I have mine wedged in the trunk with a false floor that my amps are mounted to and its not going anywhere.

On another note, sounds like you have a kick ass system. Im running a 12" Re Se on a Diamond Audio 1200.1, about 900wrms daily. Box is 2.3cuft and ported and tuned to 32hz.

ha, then go buy a jimmy or a blazer to put your setup in and quit weighing down your ass end of your car with audio components. personally i think any audio system in the trunk of a car is a complete waste because you've now contained the speaker to limited airspace. granted, any run of the mill subwoofer may be fine with that limited airspace, the caliber of speakers you're talking about would sound much better with open airspace. I like bass along with the rest of them, but i think you'd be much happier with the CF trunk. just my $.02.

Re: Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

Trying to understand the logic in this...

You want a carbon trunk, which is made to save weight

Yet you have a 50-100lb system in that trunk
AND you want to line it in heavy dynomat.

Why even bother with the cf trunk, you losy any weight savings possible with the system and dynomat you plan on putting in.

even out the weight distribution in the car for better handling IMO. get a carbon fiber hood and leave the trunk how it is.

Re: Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

i have a fiber images cf trunk and i normally run a single JL 10inch and have no isuses at all, no rattles or nothing but for a bout a month i was running 2 JL 10's and a 800w amp and it was a cazy system..still ussing that same cf trunk and no rattles at all, at first i had a liscense plate rattle but some sound insulator fixed that.

i have both a fiber images trunk and hood and to put it into perspectice i lost about 55lbs between stock components, you would be amazed that you can pick up the cf trunk with your pinky finger

Why get a CF hood if you are going to put in Dynamat... that stuff weighs a ton. Just leave the stock trunk on and roll with that bass cranked up.

no offence dude but just because your sub handles 4000w does not mean you push it to that... I have 1600w amp and 1500w sub and i also love my bass but lets be realistic here we only on average put out about 400-600w if that when we are in the car...

depends on the amp and how it is rated for power and how efficiently you can get the power to your amp... im at a steady 14.3v to both amps in the trunk.. amps USUALLY are power rated at 14.4v but SHOULD be rated at 12 (some are, the better ones) so it all depends..
also some sub brands like Fi RE DD can take more than they are rated for and his sub is a competition sub.. 4000w is a little much for daily driving, but for burps on competitions is very realistic.. though some people have proven that u can put 4k to that sub for a good while and it's fine... just saying...

Fi BTL... search it... 4000 watts rms daily.. i have it fully loaded with all the options... Ia40.1 manly amp search it too... Incriminator audio
(but with my set up and huge box i will be running it at 2 ohms and 2800 daily)
i Have a cf boser hood...

I love the look of cf and if i get cf trunk, i get the look, and if im adding weight wouldnt it make sense to try and remove as much as possible in other areas?

great idea... i used to just use velcro strips but with awd i think the launches will create a lil more force... so ill use those to keep it from going forward then i am i thinking about drilling hole under the rear seat and puttin in bolts to do a similar set up to keep it from going back...

ill get a more realistic plan when i take out the rear seats... and when i get a hold of Fi... i have emailed them so many times i need to get some new ... i forget what they are called, but they are connected to the tensils on the sub, where you put it the wire... my last ones came loose, hit the bracket and blew up :P ... so i took those out and havent been able to get a replacement set

I have been thinking about that ironically... but what i was planing on doing was putting btls brother the BL in my car and doing it at 1500 watts... the BTL(4000watts) would go into my next car... havent decided on a Black S4 avant or Chevy Trail blazer ss but thats when the big guy will get installed.. i got pics of everything but nothing is installed at the moment

if you do that much power (4k w) youre going to need a new alt and another battery and maybe even two batteries :/ that one of the only reasons i havent upgraded....

I meant trunk. Still, you will be replacing all the wight you lost by putting in Dynamat.

The best part about the tie downs is if you need to get to the spare tire u just lossen it. fold the seats and push the box on top of the seats and get your tire. dont worry i've never had to do that

All these guys bitching about heavy subs and a CF trunk. Get over it. Some people do CF because they like the look, not necessarily to lighten their car. Its like the stretched tire argument. No one is right, just a bunch of opinions.

    ^yoda rocks, awesome post!

well if your going to weigh down your ride why not lighten it... its not like when you put subs if your goal is to weigh down your car lol, you still get the lighter car for a benifit just not as much... Cf and sub is better than no CF and a sub...

Re: Carbon Fiber trunk and subwoofers?

Any sub box should be solidly mounted. The g force generated in an accident is high enough for a box to break the seat back mounts and that means you are the next thing it hits.

Composite enclosure can save a lot of space and weight if those are issues. They can also be more rigid than mdf or hdf.

A carbon trunk lid shouldn't be a problem. You won't vibrate the hardware enough to worry about. Just add a drop of loctite to the bolts when installing it.

I did a truck that spiderweb cracked the paint on the roof of it's topper but that was because it was too rigid and we hit it's resonant frequency. It was a 454 SS pickup with the topper molded to the bed. That topper was reinforced with more than a couple inches of fiberglass as was the bed and sides since they served as the enclosure for the 12 15" Lanzar pro subs. This was a Lanzar demo truck back in about 1994-95 when they made very nice equipment.

Be sure to keep an open path from the sub to the cabin. This can be a simple as holes in the rear deck. This drops the pressure in the trunk and helps get it into the cabin where it belongs.
