Is it safe to run this setup? Or will the struts blow? Thanks

They're gonna go bad eventually anyway. When I took mine off at around 105k they were so soft I could play them like an accordion. They were shot. But, to kind of answer your question, I would imagine they would go bad faster with hr lowering springs. Unless you were on sport springs and get hr sports... They I can't imagine there would be much of a difference.

it has been done, and people will still do it. If you only have the cash for springs, go for it, BUT if you can get springs.shocks combo, or coilovers might as well do it all at once and save yourself time, and some times $$$$$$

Yeah, if I can still get some miles outta them I'm probably gonna pick a set up and toss it on my stock struts. How's the ride feel? Anyone running this setup?

I'm somewhat in the same boat. Pretty strapped for cash but my 4x4 status blows. I was thinking about putting race springs on my stock shocks, probably terrible idea. Would buying some low mile-used sport shocks be worth it?

Same deal exactly. I picked up some BBS RC Rims, but they look pretty weird on my 4X4 status. i would love to drop the car, but no way i can afford more than a few hundred, and i dont wanna scrap my struts in a few thousand miles.

My 1996 is dropped ~1.75" on HR springs with no damage to my struts yet. Every time I'm pulling a wheel off for brakes or tire rotation I check them. Been like this for about 80k miles now. My car in total has 185k miles. Now I don't autocross or anything, but I do drive the car daily and have no issues with my lowered ride. It even goes through the North Eastern Ohio snow well!

i used some 1.5" drop springs on my first A4. struts lasted all of a month, then the bushings went out on them(it was FWD). so i ended up with busted shocks and needing new bushings.

i say, buy some used set that comes with struts or wait till they are on sale.

On shocks are that are already 11 years old, I'd replace them. More than 50k miles and they're way past their useful life and aren't going to hold up well to aftermarket springs.

on an interesting note, i'm running original struts and springs on 142k...several audi specialists have said they still have life in them...no clunking and no exteme bounce in them....knock on wood....but it is bizarre ain't it....chris...would love to see a car just dropped with those h and r's probably looks very clean!

Re: Stock struts with H&R lowering springs?

i'm running that setup. i have the say the ride kinda of sux of you live on bumpy roads. otherwise, you aren't that bad. you're steering response will be ridiculously quick though. your rear fenders will be just over your tire while the front is a tad higher. personally, i like the look but the ride quality i'm giving up is too much. i think a set of koni coils would be if you want to be low and have ok ride quality

Re: Stock struts with H&R lowering springs?

How often do you plan on changing the ride height on your car?
    Is it a DD?
Have you ever driven a "slammed" car vs a "lowered" car?

I went from stock non sport to HnR sports with bilstein shocks this is the difference and I love the ride...I use my car to drive 63miles one way to work.....don't ask.....in the Northeast no lesss.....

rims and stock non sport suspension

    rims and the listed suspension

the difference in springs stock non sport vs HnR sports.

No rubbing. If I put 4 people in the car it rubs....
A little of this and a little of that.......I like go, not show.

    2014 RS5

    Everything is relative.

Looking at h&r sport coils lowering 1.2" in front and 1" in back. You say with four people they rub. Are the springs you are running the same height? Will I have this problem if I decide to do this?

Holy thread revival Batman! On a more serious note, when going with springs you have to go with new struts because your old suspension simply won't take kindly to the stiffer spring rate. Get Bilstein HD struts. I love my setup.

My Y2K B5 s4 has H&R Coilover Street Performance struts & lowering springs. Both front cartridges are blown. Now my DD rides like a clown car! Can I replace just the struts with Bilsteins and keep my H&R springs? I really don't want to shell out all the $$$s they want for four new H&Rs, especially after these failed and they defaulted on their lifetime warranty, as I was not the original owner. I'm considering those shady XYZ Racing struts for $960. Any advice?
