Hotmail account passwords leaked

Thousands of Windows Live Hotmail passwords have been leaked online, Microsoft has confirmed. The news was first reported by Neowin.

According to Microsoft, it "learned that several thousand Windows Live Hotmail customers' credentials were exposed on a third-party site" at some point over the weekend. Neowin originally reported that the credentials were posted to a developer forum on Pastebin.com on October 1.

After learning of the breach, Microsoft "immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers," it wrote on its Windows Live blog.

The company was quick to point out that credentials were stolen through what was "likely a phishing scheme." The company said that it "was not a breach of internal Microsoft data." It's currently "working to help customers regain control of their accounts."

If you followed how many companies/services have compromised user lists you would never give out your info. I think the list today included the Army, several banks and a health care provider.

Facebook also made the news by admitting they had "hundreds" of compromised accounts that infected visitors with rogue/fake anti-virus products that they just managed to shut down.

According to Neowin.net, which first reported the Hotmail incident, more than 10,000 accounts had been compromised. However, Neowin said it had seen only a partial list -- accounts with usernames starting with "A" or "B" -- and suspected that the total could be much larger.

If the 10,000 accounts for A-B are extrapolated to the full alphabet, it's possible that over 100,000 accounts were compromised. "If that's the case, this would definitely be one of the biggest single phishing events," said Jevans. "But it could be the result of a long period of time, months and months of harvesting."

Both Microsoft and Jevans recommended that all Hotmail users change their passwords, just in case. "Change it, ASAP," urged Jevans.

And for everyone that is still using the same password for all their accounts, get Roboform or something similar and start using complex passwords that are different at every site.
