    Question Grind noise when accelerating

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys

Quick question, when I accelerate through my gears (driving normally) I get a quick soft 'grind' sound at the +- 2000rpm mark. I only hear it in gears 1 - 3 really. I don't know if it could be a valve or something, it doesn't sound like metal more like stone, if you know what I mean.

The car is 1.8T 110kw B6, any ideas?

    Thanks!

Nope, I just used the word 'stone' to explain that it isn't a sharp grind sound like metal on the road, as you might get driving low over a speed bump, but more like a muffled grind.

interesting, i also had this very same problem arise just a couple of days ago. But my issue was that i had damaged my exhaust piping and muffler which caused the 'grinding' noise you are referring too...mayb theres something wrong with ur exhaust? i took it to a shop and there was nothing wrong mechanically. but maybe this noise is something different from what i heard.

I have the same issue, exactly at 2200 rpms, sounds like it is more from the back of the car... it doesnt matter what gear, but with road noise, it is hard to here in 4-6... i can get mine to do it in neutral, i think it is exhaust, but not sure.

bump for anyone who thinks they know what it is

Yep, your converter has a heat shield on it that is rusting off. One side of this heat shield has rusted through the welds and is vibrating on your chassis. It only does this at certain RPM because of the way that sound works in a frequency/hertz/waves sort of way. I know it sounds weird, but this is common and actually just happened to me. Common fixes include heat wrap and wire. I used heat wrap since is won't continue to rust like wire does.

I'd jack up the car, look at your mufflers and cats till you find the top heat shield of one that is lose. Wrap it in this:

I'm getting a noise too that only happens at one rpm, usually around 2200. Did your sound seem to be coming from the engine bay or transmission area?
