Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello, I was wondering guys with 02-03 5 speed mt what kind of rpm do you get in 5th cruising 80mp/h? and those of you who have 04+ 6 speed mt 80pm/h in 6th gear? this is for 1.8t, I would be interested to hear v6 3.0 ppl also, with 6 speed mt doing 80mph... thank you for your time.

how short is your 1st gear? Im just wondering what's the max speed you can do in 1st until you hit red line? and what about 2nd gear? Im very interested about it.

    In my 02 gti 1.8t 5spd, I hit 60mph in 2nd.

Took on road trip from Indianapolis to San Antonio with cruise set at about 75mph. Avg was about 3400rpm but still made 25mpg. Still made me wish I had a 6th gear though.

Here you go. Gear ratios in all A4 & S4 transmissions: http://www.audigeeks.com/forums/index.php?topic=386.0

My friend's old '02 GTI had a Peliquin diff and TDI 5th. That 5th gear was nice. I loved that car and that is the car that got me into these. I was going to buy a GTI and mod it like his when I found my Avant.

Anyway, if you want a good set of ratios for 1/4 mile runs you might want to read this: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...22#post4116022

I, personally, have a B5 2.8 5spd in my '02 because I found it for cheap and my 1.8T 5spd has a blown 3rd gear syncro. I do miss the 1.8T gears in 1-4 but love the 5th gear from the B5 2.8. When I rebuilt the 1.8T trans next summer I'll probably hodge-podge something together like that link I just posted.

    Enjoy!

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed?

4K@80 is about right for the 1.8 speed. i love the longer gears of the 5 speed but that 5th just blows for the highway driving. i'm planning to do a rebuild in the future and swap out the 5th for the TDI long 5th gear. (Doug, i'd love a write-up if you end up doing yours :)

Here's some info i have (from Greg@dth) on the subject. IMO, if you have a spare trans, time and the $$ this mod is a no brainer.

"No, it is actually much taller than the 6th gear. Basically on my car, 4,000rpms is 84 mph, if I were ever to get around to installing it, the RPMs would drop to 3,000 at 84mph.
It is commonly refered to as the taller TDI 5th gear, it also 6% taller than a six speed tranny

    TDI 5th gear is 27:32 .685
    Standard A4 5th gear is 32:36 .888

In therory, you should be able to do 206mph with the taller TDI 5th, the fastet I have seen a B6 go with it is 194mph
    Standard A4 6th gear is 27:37 .729"

I worked this gearing out and while it will be better for MPG, I feel the .756 5th TDI gear will be better suited for the BAT guys while still staying relatively low in the rpm range. The .685 just seems like it will drop it too much (for what I'm looking for at least). I'd rather not downshift to 4th when on the highway to get into full boost. .756 will be much easier to get into boost on the hwy in 5th.

That is a very good point. My 2.8L 5th requires me to downshift sometimes (very seldom). Not sure if I want a gear taller than that. I actually thought about taking the 2.8L 5th and putting in my 1.8T trans. We'll see how the 2.8 5th works with my new set-up on the highway (since that is where 90% of my driving is).

So, it would be 1.8T 1-4 gears and 2.8 5th gear. OR, I might do something like what Hanzel is doing...

1.8tq 5-speed, at 80mph, its more like 3600RPM. The only thing good about the 5-speed 5th gear is that I don't kneed to downshift when passing or need more acceleration. I get around 28-32 mpg on the highway.

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed?

Here is what I have figured for the max speed in each gear of my 3.0 6 speed, I have tested them all and they are pretty close, within 1-2 MPH, except I have not been up to 136 in 5th gear, nor can I go 160 in 6th since I am limited, I dont think it would go that fast either, maybe 150-155.

    1 33
    2 62
    3 89
    4 113
    5 136
    6 160

Also at 80 MPH in 6th I sit right around 3k IIRC, if I downshift to 5th it goes up to around 3.3k, fifth is kinda useless, if I want power on the highway I just hop down to 4th and that will pull me up to 110 easily and then if I want economy I just use 6th. Once you get the RPMs up in 6th (just above 4k) it start to have pretty good response for a low HP V6. I think the car is geared pretty well and that is what makes it fun to drive and feel quick even though the 3.0 is not a powerful engine.

Don't tempt me I'm wondering if they are gonna come out with a wheel to replace the 71R wheel or are just going to do that wheel you have. From what I've read, the wheel you just got is supposed to flow more than even my 71R? I need to get in contact with that guy you got yours though cause I was told Forced Performance would get it up on their website, but still haven't seen it yet.

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed?

The 5 speed has lower gears than the 6 speed. Not by much, but true. Theoretically, all else equal, the 5 speed will have brisker acceleration since lower gears offer greater torque multiplication. However the downturn is that the motor must spin at higher rpm to produce the same wheel speed. So the 5 speed will be slighly less efficient and have a lower top speed in each gear.

If the data below is correct, technically a 6 speed in 5th gear will still turn a lower engine rpm than a 5 speed in 5th gear, given the same speed (ie 80mph)

And that's the problem with the 6-speed and the 4.11 gears that come in the 3.0 -- 5th gear is useless. I skip it almost every time whether down- or up-shifting. I'd rather move to a 5th that is close to a .730 and a really tall 6th for cruising. Audi actually has 5-6 gear set that would work very well.

I was looking into it several years ago but the cost was crazy nuts. Once I destroy my tranny, I'm going to rebuild with that setup though. My 3rd gear synchro is already damaged and it's very possible I'll start destroying gears once I up the hp.

Hopefully it holds up fine, but I'm saving in case it doesn't.

Tested today. 235/35/19 70mph =3150rpm. I have no reason to test what 80mph is though.

Given the above data, at 80mph, your rpms should be 3600.

My 2002 A4TQM 5speed is pretty close to 4000rpm at 80mph (w/ 215/55-16). I would love to drop that to closer to 3000rpm, both I don't any easy way of doing that....unless there is some other reason to rebuild my tranny...

Rated and real world are about the same: CVT at highway speeds give about 30-31 MPG.
