I think I asked this before, but I cant find the thread.

What brake fluid do our cars need and where should I buy?

I hear people mentioning Motul, is that stuff worth the $ and where can I get it?

Motul RBF600 is about $15.00, Motul DOT5.1 is about $7.00. If you race, take the RBF600. For daily driving, get DOT5.1.

Motul DOT5.1 is a good step up from OEM BF for street and spirited driving (even a little autoX).

    Try:

We offer Motul 5.1, RBF600 and ATE Super Gold. 5.1 is a great street/track fluid.

Pardon me but on the brake fluid container, they specifically indicate that only DOT 4.0 should be used.

    Must this be followed?

You can go up in brake fluid numbers but not go down. ie you could not use dot 3. Only exception is dot 5.0 which is a synthetic brake fluid and will damage seals on any vehicle that does not come from the factory with it.

5.1 is not synthetic. It has a higher boiling point and works well on high performance applications where heat and boiling could be an issue. I use to use dot 4 in my race bike but would need to bleed it often as there was always small air bubbles this past year I filled the system with dot 5.1 and had no problems at all. My bike braked better and the lever had less play. Hope this helps

DOT5.0 is silicone, a no-no in our car. DOT5.1 is perfectly suited for use in our brake system (although some ignorant dealers/techs have raised objections w/o knowing better).

    Motul DOT5.1

"Non-silicone based, long life and 100% synthetic, DOT 5.1 BRAKE FLUID conforms to the highest standards in brake fluid performance. DOT 5.1 is specially designed for Anti-Locking Brake Systems (ABS). With a high dry boiling point of 270°C and a high wet boiling point of 185°C, DOT 5.1 delivers the best brake performance."

    Product DOT 5.1 BRAKE FLUID

Feature 100% synthetic, polyglycol-based. Specially designed for anti-locking brake system (ABS).

    SAE/DOT Standard FMVSS 116, DOT 5.1, DOT 4, DOT 3 &
    SAE J1703

Compatibility All types of hydraulic actuated brakes and clutch systems (not to be used with silicon and mineral-based brake fluids).

Is it true that DOT 5.1 brake fluid should only be used with steel braided lines?

Not sure but I dont see why, I believe the core of the brake line is the same as the rubber ones....the only difference is that the rubber is covered with steel brades to prevent them from flexing thus allowing more force to be applied to the pistons.
