    Trip Computer Retrofit

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello there,

Just curious as to if it is possible to retrofit a trip computer on a 2006 A4. I know I would need a new windshield wiper lever (with the Reset and Selector buttons). Has anyone done this? Where can I get the parts and coding I need?

    Thanks for the help,

    V 4.0

new wiper stalk, then windshield sensor and run a wire or ground it.

coding, in vag, forgot what section...I would believe in the instrument section.

Thank you, definitely a step in the right direction. Do you know what module (computer) and harness I have to buy for it? I'd like to have the MPG, timer, and all that good stuff that comes with the trip computer.

Does anyone have any more info on this?

    Thanks for the help.

What is the windshield sensor for? This is something I would like to do with my Avant. I have the computer that only shows miles remaining in the tank, and would like to have the one that displays MPG etc.

There was a thread about this not too long ago, but I don't think it went very far... http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307760

I don't think it would, but then again, I don't know for sure. Hence the thread. And yea, all I have now is the distance to empty (DTE) display, but no more. I would assume you need an extra module to be plugged in somewhere and then get coded. Hope someone who konws picks up the thread...

    Re: Trip Computer Retrofit

you dont need the comfort control for DIS. You will need comfort control, if you plan on retrofitting memory seats and mirrors (if I am not mistaken)

Ill chime in a little later when I am not on my phone, with a bit more detail.

On another forum I got pointed to http://www.tyresmoke.net/
    He said (Quote):

"Try looking in the A4 Forum on TyreSmoke Network - Car Related Joy where there's a whole topic on this issue.

Basically it's a new wiper stalk and some re-coding, but you also need to deal with an alarm that you will get due to non trip computer cars not having a washer fluid level sensor. This can be either "got rid of" by grounding a pin, or you can retrofit the level sensor easily enough. - PetrolDave"

Great, let me know how difficult it is, and total cost, although it sounds like all that is needed is the wiper stalk and a vag-com.

Wow, you're right. It can be done. I was reading a link in the post above about fitting the washer level sensor (which I'd probably want to do since I want a fully functional system)....

Let me know how it goes.

    I've done it

I've done exactly what you are asking for. Added DIS to my 2006 Audi A4. I have another guy on the Audiworld forums asking for me to write up the instructions as well. If I get a chance, I'll see if I have time to give you detailed instructions. Here's a rough outline, but this is only from memory without my notes in front of me...

    Stuff you'll need
    1) Purchase wiper stalk with OBD controls (rocker switch on end, I'll get you part number when I get home.)
    2) Purchase or have available an extra wire to ground the washer fluid sensor (I purchased exact wire with wiper stalk, made life easy.)
    3) Purchase hex/star screwdrivers, I believe a 15T with a 3" shank to get into the tough to reach spots without scuffing anything.
    4) Ross-Tech Vag-Com
    5) Permanent marker to mark steering wheel alignment spot
    6) Camera to take pictures to post for the next person that needs help

What you need to do (missing details that I need to fill in later.)
    1) Remove steering wheel
    2) Mark with pen the current alignment of steering column
    3) Take the rest of the steering column apart
    4) Remove gauges
    5) Connect pin #xxx on connector yyyy to a grounding point (this is the washer fluid sensor that will be enabled with the Vag-Com changes, and if it's not grounded, your DIS will say washer fluid low FOREVER.)
    6) Remove old wiper stalk
    7) Install new wiper stalk
    8) Put it all back together (good time to adjust steering wheel if it wasn't correct to begin with.)
    9) Wonder why you have extra screws (hahah, just kidding)
    10) Use Vag-Com to enable the DIS.

I used information from various forums and from a forum posting or two from a guy over in Europe named Ben Wardle. I don't have the links now, but I'll try to get them to you later.

    Re: I've done it

Ah, thank you. I was reading a forum about this but the only detailed instruction I could find was on how to install the washer level sensor and not on how to install the stalk. I would have fiddled around until realizing I had to remove steering wheel and not mark the position (so would have been royally FKD). I think I have the part numbers I need:

    Washer bottle sensor: 7M0 919 376
    Contact Housing (plug): 1J0 973 202
    Connector Wires: 000 979 009A
    Connector Wires: 000 979 133A

I don't have the part number for the multifunction stalk but I can get one from someone in this forum.

You make a good point about the camera. I was thinking to do a write up after I'm done so that there is a concise post to deal with it (if everything goes well for me that is).

I'll start the upgrade as soon as I get the parts.

    Thanks for the help.

Hi all. Interesting topic. I looked at GAP and the total for all parts is $166. That is doable.

I am just concerned about the VAG COM. Haven't used it yet. As far as I understand VAG COM you can have the software unregistered with limited features. But to perform this mod you need a registered copy with all functions, correct?

Would be great if somebody could clarify.

Well i was able to do this, not too bad except removing the MFSW. I have everything installed and recoded, however, I haven't installed the repair wire yet, as I can't see to find out what pin# on the cluster T32 blue connector to insert into. Some other threads from Tyresmoke and VWVOrtex have pin# for a B6 or A3, however, those pin# have wires there already. Can anyone help here.

Yes - you need to have the registered/full version of VCDS/VAG-COM; unregistered free version does not let you change adaptation channels 10 or higher.

The pin is for a fluid level sensor in the windshield washer reservoir. Highly probable that all North American Audi A4/A3 models have this sensor as a standard factory option. If you don't get the washer fluid display showing when you turn the ignition on you are good to go - the icon looks like a little fountain. You could confirm by just pushing on the button under the cluster with the wrench on it; that takes you through a self test of all the available monitoring functions. UK/Europe have a much greater flexibility to add/remove options so the washer fluid level sensor was often one that wasn't added.

My car didnt come with sensor in 2006 (a4 B7) unless you ordered the technology package, with gives you trip computer, xenon, and sensor. I need to ground the pin, however, what pin# is it on the T32 connector Blue? Did your car come with sensor?

Without adding the wire to the pin do you currently get an error message showing on your cluster?

My car has all options except RNS-E Nav; just when it shipped from the factory they "forgot" the trip computer option so I made my dealer retrofit it. I've never let the washer fluid in the Avant run that low that the sensor was triggered but there is a wire attached to the top of the washer reservoir so I assume it connects to the sensor inside. Sorry can't tell you what pin on the blue connector as that would mean I'd have to pull the instrument cluster out.

BTW it's also possible that the current wire in Pin #1 on the connector goes nowhere (it's just part of the North American loom) so if you added your wire in there and grounded it you would be fine. I'd check to see if there's a 12V or not sitting there before I tried grounding it however . I suspect the washer sensor is a switch that completes a ground connection and goes open circuit when the fluid is low.

Hello there, the pin number for an A4 is #1 on the left connector. Can't remember if it is blue or green, I think it is green though, but don't quote me on that. There is a lot of info on tyresomke.net where I found which one to use. All I remember is that it was on the left hand side (behind the tachometer). There should already be a wire in that pin. I piggy backed the sensor in. Mind you, I didn't ground it, I installed the washer sensor but I have heard others have grounded it. I grounded the other wire coming from the sensor. Ground pin 1 at your own risk. There should be a ground terminal underneath the instrument cluster. Hope this helps. Good luck.

    LJ

Thanks, I grounded Pin#1 and it worked, I just removed the existing wire in pin#1 and inserted the repair wire added a ring terminal at other end and grounded to bolt in back of cluster. Did you just have to add the sensor or get a new lower washher fluid container?

    Re: Trip Computer Retrofit

First thing first, I can not accept any liabilities for the following information; you do this at your own risk. These text/pictures are provided to detail how I did my retrofit. Again, proceed at own risk.
For retrofitting the trip computer into my car, this is what I did. Read below:

    1. Got the parts I needed
A wiper stalk – can purchase by looking at classifieds in the site (need part number)
    Washer bottle sensor: 7M0 919 376
    Contact Housing (plug): 1J0 973 202
    Connector Wires: 000 979 009A

    2. Coded the car (taken from: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...nction+display )
When reading background info on doing the retrofit, I noticed everybody installed the wiper stalk first, then coded the car and grounded pin #1 as to not have the washer empty warning, then installed the washer sensor. When I did my install, I installed the wiper stalk and washer sensor then tried to code. I think when the cluster got additional info from the washer sensor that wasn’t supposed to be there, it freaked out and wouldn’t let me in to code. I had to ground pin #, code, then re-connect washer sensor. This is why I recommend coding first, then doing the install.

I opted to have to have onboard computer functionality with level 1 and 2 (read owner’s manual for description of both).

    3. Remove Battery
After I removed the battery, I made sure by testing that power was off. This is a very important step because the next step is to remove the air bag.

    4. Install Wiper Stalk
Remove screws from bottom of steering wheel column. There should be two Torx on either side and an Allen down the middle. Picture 1 (items 7 and 8) shows the two Torx screws.

Remove air bag (I made sure you didn’t skip step 3) by loosening two Torx screws in the back of the steering wheel as shown in Picture 2.

Once air bag is off, unplug it and the holding screw for the steering wheel will be exposed as shown in Picture 3. It can be removed with a T55.

After the wheel holding crew is off, I marked the location of the steering wheel on the teeth pattern so that I could put it back exactly as it was (if not, the ESP icon will light up when the car is on and the wheel will be crooked). My marking is shown on Picture 4.

After the steering wheel is off, I could see the cancelling ring with steering sensor (shown in Picture 5 and Picture 1, item #10). The ring should come off by gently pulling it straight out. The wiper stalk can then be unscrewed and replaced by the new one.

When putting the wheel back together, I used a torque wrench and blue Loc-Tite to secure it in place with the T55. Torqued up to 50nm as described here (http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/audi-...-a4-b6-12.html )

    5. Install Washer Level Sensor
The left front wheel and wheel well cover had to come off. In some forums I read that installing the sensor was as simple as reaching in, removing the plug and sticking the sensor in. I had to remove the lower washer bottle to do this. It doesn’t have to come off completely as the place where the sensor goes can be seen if one twists the bottle to one side as shown in Picture 6.

After the sensor is in place, one of the wires has to be grounded, I used the nearby ground terminal shown in Picture 7 (the yellow repair wire can be seen in the picture). Others have used the ground in the back of the instrument cluster. In retrospect, I should have used that one as to not have any yellow repair wire showing.

The wires were routed through the inside of the wheel well to the drive’s side of the well. A set of rubber nipples that are hidden by the wheel well liner can be used to bring the wire(s) to the inside of the cabin (ran out of space in camera, no pics from here on…).

I removed the instrument cluster by first removing the trim and then the screws behind it that hold the cluster in place. The blue plug that houses pin one, was behind the tachometer. There was a wire there already; I piggy backed the wire from the sensor in to it. To remove the plug, I had to lift the orange lock carefully with a flat head screw driver and then pulled it out.

Once the soldering was done, I replaced the connector and put everything back together. Re-plug the battery and enjoy trip functionality.

That’s how I did it. Cheers,
    V4.0

    Re: Trip Computer Retrofit

So do you need to get the sensor whether or not you have the icon showing up in the beginning @ startup system check?

I have the icon showing up and want to know if I still need all that stuff. Could save me a few bucks if I don't

I know my wipers are rain sensing

No, you can ground pin 1 instead. I added it because my goal is to add as much functionality as that car can offer me. But you don't have to.

Your wipers are rain sensing? Did that come with the car or did you add it yourself? If it came with the car, could you get me the part number for the windshield you have? Need to replace mine so might as well add the functionality. The rear view mirror with rain/light sensor is in the mail as we speak...
