    Re: quattro vs 4motion

    alot of info here

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307379

basically 4motion is a haldex system, much like the a3 and TT. its AWD on demand. power will only go to the rear if the front starts to slip. quattro is 4 wheels spinning all the time.

this gif explains haldex a bit, watch the front tires close

    Re: quattro vs 4motion

quattro- all four moving at ALL times (audi quattro, subaru etc.)

4x4- the vehicle senses slippage, or the slightest loss of traction, instantly the rears get power kicked to them (vw r32, lexus, jeep)

quattro is REAL awd if you ask me... when you're on the highway on a dry day in an r32 doing 70 your front are getting power only...really, that is all you need. but say you hit black ice or sand patch real bad or have to dodge a deer lets say.....the rears kick in

If you hit a patch of black ice at 70 you're gonna need more than quattro to get you outta that jam.

4motion on a early B5 passat is the same Drivetrain as a Audi B5 a4.... actualy similar trans, and rear diff. Its just the Name brand, quattro is audi's name, 4motion is Vw name..

Yep, B5 and B5.5 Passats, 1998-2004 or 05 are Quattro, but all transverse apps are haldex, like a TT.
