The way it was explained to me, Nitrogen can only be truly effective if the tires are FULLY inflated with it. Since there is already a decent amount of air in the tires before they are inflated with nitrogen, your pressures will still fluctuate pretty close to normal with temperature. I've seen plenty of so-called independent tests that indicate no real long term benefit from using nitrogen, but never actually tried it myself since I check my pressure regularly and have an air compressor at home. It wouldn't make sense to top nitrogen filled tires with "regular air."
