    Question A few questions about a 97 a6.

I got my first car, a 1997 a6 quattro, not to long ago. I always wanted an Audi and finally found one I could afford. That being said its not in the greatest shape (good but not great), but I wanted to learn more about it and fix it myself. So here are my questions, hope you can help...

    1. The previous owner let the power steering pump go out on it, I already bought the pump and put it on and it works great, except when I turn I hear like a grunt sound if i turn to far, it also makes that noise when I brake sometimes and when I hit bumps sometimes. Could that be my shocks or what? Another thought I had was since there was no power steering fluid running through my car for so long maybe it messed something up, but I dont know what, or how to fix it.

    2. This hose was pieced together with larger fittings than its supposed to have and it wont let my engine cover snap in properly, I am going to replace it. What is this?

    3. No clue where this hooks up or what it does, its under all of my reservoirs.

    4. Last but not least, what is this where the rings are on the opposite side of the engine from the oil? I know its a filter of some type, but what?

Sorry this is so long, all your help is much appreciated!

That wire looks like ether turn signal or for the foglight.
The plastic hose coming from the valve cover was cracked and taped together. they brake all the time.

    I have a 96 A6 im rebuilding.

So the wire you think goes to one of the back of the lights, what's the actual piece of hose called so I can try to track one down? Nobody knows about the grunting coming from around the wheels? Thanks everyone

It often takes quite a bit of time to get all of the air out of the power steering system after a pump replacement. Take the cap off of the power steering reservoir and slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times and keep checking the fluid level. Otherwise, it's possible that the steering rack was damaged when the pump failed, but I'd check the fluid levels first.

another big point is to use the correct fluid, audi uses mineral oil not atf fluid for steering, you can get it euro parts stores

    Re: A few questions about a 97 a6.

Yeah I believe they used the incorrect fluid before, that's what messed up my pump. The dealership replaced my engine right after I bought it because the cam shaft locked up. They claimed I just had a leak, but it was the pump. Now I drained my reservoir and put in the mineral oil. The sound seems to come from around my front two tires. The power steering is working though. I tried to get any air out, but that didn't work. I don't know much about cars but I am trying to figure out what it may need in hopes of not spending a fortune in a shop diagnosing the problem, then having to buy the parts and fix it.
