I would assume that you had a car in mind before selling your A4? If not, what was your reason in selling, if I may ask.

There are ALOT of cars out there in the $20K range. I mean ALOT. It all depends on what you do with your car. Do you want to race it? Do you want to cruise in it? A little of both? What's your intentions for the car? BTW, not 'really' a B5 post. More like a general post to me...

Give us a little more info on what you want a car for...

Ok. I'm not trying to diss or flame Avants, but I have one question. Why is the avant so popular? The big reason I didn't want the Avant was because I didn't like the feeling I'd be driving a 'wagon. Can anybody tell me why the Avant is such a hot pick? (I heard it is mainly because the engine is so much like an RS4, but I thought I'd ask some real avant owners).

They are nice but, it makes more sense to upgrade to a more powerful car instead of a "newer" car. I have nothing against the B6 at all. I'm just showing that you should get more power along with a newer car. By that, I don't mean 170HP...

Personally, I'd look for a second hand B5 S4. If you can't do your own repairs, nevermind.

I'd hit an STI also - but ditch the wing and that massive intake duct on the hood.

^^^^^ or get a CF hood and relocate the IC to a FMIC (on the STI).

You would also need for me to take it for a spin!

Avants have the exact same engine as the sedans. I bought my avant because I think it looks great. I love it. You bought a sedan instead of a coupe...why not a wagon. Wagons aren't what they used to be. It's just a sedan that has more usable room and better weight distribution.

Alright, cool. I guess you're right about the image of a weagon, it has changed a good bit. All my friend's moms had wagons so I kinda felt like I'd be driving a mom mobile, but the Audi is by far the nicest wagon there is. Thanks for the non-hostile reply .

My wife has a 04 Avant and I have a B5 sedan. You don't even notice that you are driving a wagon until it is time to take the dog somewhere. I don't feel like a soccer mom or anything when I roll in it. I suppose the sport package helps that a bit. The interior design is really nice, especially with the SAT radio. The B6 is a noticeably stiffer chassis too. My B5 rattels like a steel cage, but the B6 is silent. We'll see what happens as it gets more miles. Regardless, a B6 is a great next car if you want to stay in the Audi family!

Yeah once you sit in the back seat of an a4/s4 avant you will definately realize its not a soccer mobile. All the huge wagons of years ago are now replaced by mini vans.

Stefan....We definately need to know why you sold your B5 and what you are looking for in a new car. I would definately recommend a B5 s4 avant

Aussie - love the woody picture!

wagons are popular because they have more usable space than the sedans. they are more utilitarian, and for a lot of people (like me) I think they look so much better than the sedan equivalents its a joke(except the wrx, where the wagon is slightly uglier than its hideous sedan counterpart).

test drive one to get a feel for the difference, then just spend some time looking it over, you'll be convinced too. many of my friends laugh at me for being a "wagon"-man as they like to say, but they all like my avant as much or more than my other buddies sedan. I even have one friend whom after driving his volvo wagon for a year told me he understands the wagon mentality now and will never buy a sedan again.
