If you've taken off the panel, it'ss one of the big grey 5 pin relays. I believe that it's the second one in from the right on the panel that faces the rear of the car.

    Re: fuel pump relay?

heres the link to my other thread

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305112

All the short to grounds seem to go through the fuel pump relay. I pulled the 372 relay and it looks like it may have slight burns at the base and tip of three of the prongs. I will post the picture of it later tonight when I am back home.

Is it possible the circuit in the relay that powers all those things that I have codes for is shorting, and the other circuit for the fuel pump and such is still working fine?

Thanks for the help everyone i really appreciate it.

That could be possible. unlikly but possible. That branch your having trouble with is fused after the relay. I know that much. Take a picture of the relay.

    Re: fuel pump relay?

best I could do. See how the prongs look kind of burned on the base and tips? other relays didnt resemble that at all.

That would also make sense that it is connected after the relay, since I am still able to start and drive the car.

I know this is years after, but was the relay the issue here? Just seeking an answer since I have similar issues. Will pull my own relay tonight.

It was a super common issue to have to replace these in many vw/audi cars of this generation. The symptoms would be a plethora of short to ground codes for multiple different systems.

That relay powers up quite a few things and can cause a lot of crazy codes.
Check fuses first (iirc 27,28,34), then open the relay and inspect the contacts. Some have gotten lucky tweaking them back.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

Thats true. I cracked mine open and found that the contacts were pitted and burned. Once they corrode a bit the damage rapidly starts to accumulate.

Thanks for the pictures guys, took my S4 to a uhaul to have trailer electronics installed, went to start it up and nothing but chugging. Checked the fuses, all good. It being a high mileage s4 I had a spare fuel pump ready, installed it last night and still nothing. Still no fuel pump prime noise. Today I replaced the old fuel pump relay shown above (really thought this would do it) with pitting etc and still nothing.... am I required to clear the codes? Towing it to AU tuning tomorrow :/

Thats just residue on the prongs at the base underside. Wipes away with cloth or finger nail. Zero cause for concern. Unless the the prongs have changed in color this is not an issue. Just oxidization, oils from the plastic, many debris over the past 20 years. Its a used relay.

As for the issue, It would have to be from what ever the U-haul place touched. Can't be anything else. Perhaps they spliced wires into something there weren't supposed to.
