DIY: Fix broken glove box hinge

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The right side hinge on my glove box door broke and I didn't want to pay $300 to replace the entire glove box, so I did a few searches and found an AZ member who sells hinge repair kits... His name is Fritz and he goes by PCYC. I figured "what the hell" and ordered one.

Fritz made the bracket and I received it just a few days later. It's a quality part, made of really strong steel. The screw holes were counter sunk, he included the screws and the whole thing was painted matt black.

I followed the included instructions and managed to remove the two hinge pins that held the glove box door, and removed the door. Here's a shot of my broken hinge:

The bracket Fritz provided fit the curves of the hinge perfectly. I spent some time making sure it was lined up properly, drilled four 1/16" pilot holes for the screws, and installed the bracket. I also put a liberal amount of crazy glue on the break, but it really wasn't necessary.

While I had the door off I removed the piston that is connected to the door. Just unclip the wiring harness, and twist the piston around until knob that connects it to the glove box lines up just right and it will pop off. I tried to move the piston in and out and had to really use a lot of force, clearly this was the reason that the hinge broke in the first place. I considered leaving it disconnected, but if I did that the light wouldn't work. So, I drilled a small hole in the end of the piston, and dribbled some oil in there. After I worked the piston back and forth a few times it started moving easily. The hole isn't very big, I used the same 1/16" bit, so there is still some negative pressure that slows the piston's movement a bit.

Here's where I drilled the hole:

And here's the piston attached back to the glove box, it just needs to be rotated back around so the back of the part (with the hole) is pointing toward the front of the car:

When I reinstalled the glove box door I found that the hinge bracket was rubbing against the part of the glove box that surrounded it, so I used my dremel to sand just a tiny bit off the front of the surround to make it a bit bigger. I didn't take any pics of that, but it will be obvious where you need to sand if you run into the same problem. Problem solved, so I reinstalled the pins holding the door to the glove box, connected the piston and the wiring harness, and that was it.

I can't say enough about the quality of the part that Fritz makes, it was well worth the $25. The bracket is practically invisible from inside the car, you have to be looking for it to even see it, and the repair makes it just like the glove box door was never broken. If you have a broken hinge on your glove box this is the way to go, just pm PCYC and he will set you up.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't have an appropriate piece of metal on hand nor do I have the right tool to cut it into the proper shape so buying the completed bracket seemed like the way to go. $25 shipped was a cheap price to pay to get my glove box back in service, and the install was involved enough that I was still able to get a pretty good "diy high" out of the deal.

Just fixed mine with your kit. Cant thank you enough!! I was about 12 hours away from my appt with the dealer to get it replaced ($435) when I saw this thread.

The hardest part was getting those damn pins out. Nothing some needle-nose pliers and a hammer can't fix though.

    Thanks again!

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics

Thanks, Dave and Fritz. The first time around I paid the dealer to replace it. Now seeing that this is a common problem I will use this remedy should I experience a repeat break. The other common hinge that breaks is in the armrest. I guess that there are probably some forum notes on this somewhere, too.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics

i had the same problem with my glove box, broken hinge. i've read a few threads here and saw somebody got his fixed by dealership at no cost. so i took my car in, they looked at it and they ordered some part they said. they called me when got the part and had it installed. i was surprised to see that the actual part was the hole glove box and the nice part it was no cost, the car still being under the factory warranty. i tought this would be helpfull for some of u guys. they cannot really say it's tear and wear, when they made a bad piston. i think they should have recall for that problem. so give it a try and go there showing that u know the problem.

You just have to have patience and keep at it, the first time you remove those pins it's a real pita. One of the pins on my glove compartment seemed like it just wasn't going to come out, I messed with it for more than an hour. I finally got it by putting the vice grips on it, then moving the vice grips back and forth while tapping on the vice grips with a hammer to move the pin out.

It's probably easier if you take the glove compartment out of the car first, I would have done that if I knew what a pain it would be to get the pins out.

I took the glovebox out, grabbed the pins with a pair of needle-nose pliers, queezed REALLY HARD with one hand, and used a hammer with my other hand to hit the pliers until the pins came out.

now do one on 'my glove box was too stiff, so I fixed it'

my glovebox was nightmarishly stiff from new. I read a couple of threads and found last week that there is a TSB and the dealer will fix the 'too stiff' piston that causes the problem. Called the dealer, and told them...service guy came out to check the car and when I click the latch, WHAMMO...no longer stiff. Works perfectly.

So strange. Anyway, mine is cured. No idea how.

Clip the vice grips on the pin, then move them back and forth while tapping on the vice grips with a hammer to back the pin out of the hinge. It's a major pain but the pin will come out, you just need to keep at it.

oh man, i think the plastic housing around my pin is going to crack before i get this pin out. I can already see a crack forming. I've almost chewed the head off completely using vice grips.. Mine is not budging AT ALL.. It's not even moved 1mm.

I'm thinking about drilling a hole from the outside, so i can bang it out.. It seems the other side has a hole so you can bang it out.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics

I was having a hell of a time, but a small pair of vice grips worked. Just twisted it a bit back and forth and both pins came out. Weird that vice grips arent working for you.

I had to do a little bending and what not to get the hinge to fit, and dremeled part of the glovebox surrond, but it ended up working.

Also had to drill a hole in the piston head and oil it a little bit, because that thing was not moving back and forth at all.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics

Thanks, I finally managed to get the pins out... On one side, there's a hole so i managed to punch it down with using a hole punch and hammer.. On the other side, being that there was no hole, i had no choice but to drill one.. Using vice grips was not working for me.. I even dremmelled out some of the surroundings to get a better grip. None of which worked. I even nearly broke my nose tip pliers and vice grips from over use of my hammer.. Mine were not coming out.. So this is for those who have the same problem.. Drill a hole and punch it out... Yes i have a small hole now, but it's very low down and you'd never notice it unless you were looking..

As for the rest of the job, i'd say it's fairly complicated.. I had trouble lining it all up.. The part never really was a snug fit and it took some playing around and in the end i had to re-install it a two or three times to get it all lined up...

But it's in now.. i hope it holds with the new bracket? Time will tell...

Just ordered a fix it kit from Fritz.
2 S4's 3 broken glove boxes. The first 2 were under warrantee. In spite fo carbon fiber trim curling off, broken glove boxes, leaky valve covers, and some disappearing oil, this S4 is still my most favorite car to drive in my 40+ years of owning a lot of different rides. Really.
