I'm sure it's do-able, but it will be very expensive. You'll need a new center console button assembly (if not, just the new joystick), the entire computer system, rewiring of the AMI, the new LCD (and LCD frame), possibly a new glove box interior lining, and the entire MOST and hardware system in the back. Plus the labor to do all that.

You're better off just getting a 2010 model.

it possible but very expensive. every module in the mmi is different. audi has combined a few modules so the fiberoptic lupe is different. the modules are in different places. Good luck if you go forward with the conversion. I lloked into it for a customer and when the cost was reaching the thousands...he said I will wait for the 2010 model!!

Not sure I understand the logic of saying "just get the 2010 model" since you'll be taking a depreciation hit on your current vehicle just for a new nav system, which for the original poster's 2008 is probably on the order of $10,000+. And you can say that it's "worth it" because you'll have a newer car, but that's still a lot of money out of your pocket when all you wanted was the newer nav. I bet it's expensive, but I doubt it's over $10k, probably a lot closer to $5k.

You also get a refresh on your warranty, assurance that your car is now on its second revision, most of the bugs would've been worked out. Overall, it would be a more solid car.

Re: Upgrading MMI to 3rd Gen

I've posted this over on the Audiforum and want to do the same thing. I've installed the Audi Navigation in every car since 1999. I've done it many of times and it can't be that hard. I know that it will be expensive but that's fine as I was wanting a 2010 model anyway basically for the 3G MMI.

We should work together and get this done. I'm not in any hurry and it will require a lot of prep work prior. I want to have every thing lined up before I attempt the install.

Re: Upgrading MMI to 3rd Gen

Thanks for the input. Although it would be nice to upgrade, it seems like it is going to be a huge effort to do so, and if you put the costs aside, the time and risks involved with this probably aren't worth it.

Re: Upgrading MMI to 3rd Gen

From my understanding it will cost near the $5000-$6000 dollar mark to retrofit. I am prepared to do this but it will take time. I would like to see it completed sometime by the end of this year.

It's actually worth it to me to do this as I use my car on the road/highway driving many miles in towns I have know idea where I'm at. One of the weakest points on this car is the Navigation compared to the RNS-E, I was using and I was thinking this new MMI would be better since it was newer than the RNS-E I was using at 7-8 years old.
