Why does my A4 2.0 sound like a TDI?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i just bought a 2007 A4 2.0 w/ 28k. I like the albeit a smaller car than I am used to driving ( Lexus) I noticed that the car is loud at idle. It alomst sounds like a diesel. I checked the oil and it is perfect. I was told by the dealer ([North Bay Imports in Connecticut) that the car had an oil change and was checked out by the service guy. Is it normal for the 2.0T to sound this way? I am used to no noise at all from the Lexus.
BTW, I like this forum. I am new to the German engineering world.
    Thanx!!

That is what the 2.0TFSI motor sounds like. Normal for this motor. Keep in mind the car will burn through oil.

    Good luck with the car.

Re: Why does my A4 2.0 sound like a TDI?

The Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI aka FSI in Audi speak) is what makes this sound. This is the sound of efficiency and torque!

Honestly, you are probably hearing the high-pressure fuel pump and high-pressure injector solenoids firing. Including the pump, that's 5 decently loud solenoids operating at one time. Here's a video 7 FSI injectors firing under low-pressure (100 psi) on a test stand at APR. http://www.goapr.com/media/videos/D6...7307F32D3229B/

Your A4 is running at 725 PSI (50 bar) at idle and 1595 PSI (110 bar) under full load. Modern common-rail diesels can run up to approx. 20,000 PSI depending on the system type. The system in your Audi can't touch the diesels for pressure but the pressure and the rail pump and injector combo contribute to the noise. Just know that this noise is contributing to the responsiveness and efficiency that you have come to love in your A4.

The FSI engine in the B7 is known for its coarseness. They improved the engine in the B8, but in no way is it close to Lexus for smoothness and lack of noise. Just don;'t drive / idle next to walls.

It is also not close to the Lexus in reliability or even fit and finish.

That said, the Lexus is probably no comparison for driving experience -- performance, handling, etc.

They both have their strengths. Welcome to the world of Audi. Hope you have a good experience.

Yeah, they might of accidentally put a Volkswagen TDi engine under your hood.
Nah, just kidding -- it's normal for 2.0 FSI to sound like that, just don't fill'er up with Diesel though; I recommend 'Super Unleaded'.

Re: Why does my A4 2.0 sound like a TDI?

I have a 2.0 TDI and I have test driven a 2.0 TFSI... honestly, the reason why I did not go for the FSI was the stupid noise it makes: Diesel sound for a Petrol engine.

The Common rail system which helps you go up in the MPG set up in these FSI engine also helps the noise go up in dB.

So finally I opted out and took a 2.0 TDI which has sufficient punch at low rev and has a dreamy 55 mpg on average.

    Voila.

I came from a WRX with full bolt ons and turbo swap, so the a4 seems really quiet to me...but mine does have the noise at idle also.

I understand, but fit and finish is a separate issue from design.

One could design a beautiful interior but if it is put together poorly, using cheap material then that is no good. Lexus has been known as the standard for this aspect, not necessarily design innovation.

Glove boxes that keep falling off and armrests that keep breaking do nothing to bolster Audi's claim with regard to fit and finish, innovative design notwithstanding.

Fit and finish is how the interior fits together and how polished it looks. Audi beats Lexus and Acura hands down. Infiniti comes a close second.
Now, the quality of said pieces used in the fit and finish is another story. Still, I've yet to have any of my interior break.

I was shopping for a A4 2.0T recently, some are MUCH louder than others. I drove an 05 with 28k that really did sound as loud as my 96 Passat TDI. It had been sitting on the dealer lot for 5+ months... no wonder no one wanted it! My 06 was probably the quietest of the bunch that I drove.

Re: Why does my A4 2.0 sound like a TDI?

So me and buddy were arguing this last week i said Audi has the best interior so he looked into it. Sadly we finish third.... after BMW and lexus but obvy we are bias, we own these cars and i personally which this is an opinion that our int. is nicer.....then he hit me with this slap in the face...."So you kno I'm at my internship surfing the web so I decide to google top rated car interiors. What pops up none other than this "Top 10: Best car interior 35k-45k"... I would just like to share with you that your beloved slow audi car company did make the list only after BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes, and Lexus. Oh and btw it was the A5 with the navi package that made #5 But don't worry your a4 made the 25-35k list at #3 again after Bmw and Lexus. (Only cuz cadilac and benz are too expensive)."..lol he kills me then he said he would buy an S5 but have to spend all his money re doing the interior lmfao !!

I too have yet to have any of my interior break, but there are quite a few on AZ who have.

As for the fit and finish ratings -- many will have different opinions of course. I am not doubting that Audi interiors are award winning for their design, but I already many my point I think.

Also, from the various reviews I have seen over the years in the car mags, they tend to also regard the Lexus interiors in high regard -- above Audi from what I can tell.

Does it really make a difference ... to me no. I don't have a Lexus, and never did.

^^The new 09 CTS interior is nice. They have ambient lighting behind all of the trim pieces...Looks really good.

The only Lexus that I know of that got good interior reviews was the new IS 250/350. This was seen as a break through for Lexus who was previously known for relatively low-end interior materials. Infiniti is definitely not known for their interiors either. Lots of hard plastics and monotone orange gauges. Without sounding like one of the fanbois, the germans have consistently been top of the class in this regard, but other brands are starting to step it up. The Caddie above for instance.

Hehehe ... I agree. They are trying and have made great improvements. They are now in the 21st century .... finally. Maybe a little bankruptcy is good, after all. Gets the bosses to learn to listen to the people.

Hey I am all for being friends with everyone ... as long as they show respect and debate points and not hurl insults. We all have different POVs and all are equally valid. I just wished that approach was more frequently enforced here. More lurkers might actually post!

I like your gutsy post above, daring to state that maybe, just maybe there is some evidence that there are some reviews which support the opinion that Lexus and a few other marques might be ahead of Audi as far as interiors go.

At the end of the day it is a preference thing and it really doesn't matter a goddamn which one is better, as long as it is better to the person driving it.
