    Painting chrome window trim Gunmetal?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, looking for your thoughts. My chrome window trim has oxidized and looks like poo. My car is dolphin gray, with USP replicas in hypersilver (an almost gunmetal look). I thought of painting them black or using the vinyl stuff everyone seems to be playing with, but thought this might be cool/unique. I would also do the same to my front grille. Thoughts on the look, also on the feasibility of performing the task in a quality manner?

Def get rid of the chrome. I have mine in black on DG and it looks really hot, i think if you could do it nice in gunmetal it would look really awesome as well!

i was thinking of doing this to my b5 s4, the chrome just doesnt match the car anymore. i was thinking of going black or a red with a very dark tint. you should go ahead and try it, i would try the gunmetal, sounds like it would look pretty nice on ur color setup.

There is a guy in the B6/B7 S4/RS4 forum that recently did his with plastidip on his RS4. It turned out pretty nice. Might look into that.

they make several different products...i would suggest try using electrical tape first to see if you like the look or the matte-ish color that it comes in, then gravitate towards a product know as "black-out" tape which is specifically made for blacking out chrome trim, hold up pretty strong n such. I personally have electrical tape on mine and i love it. Other people try plasti-dipping it and it to me seems like more work than its worth trying to shroud your car properly, plus it tends to peel. You can try painting it, but being that the upper portion of the chrome is glue n locked into place it is not easy to remove to paint properly thats why you see everyone wrapping theres..not trying to shoot down your idea, just trying to save you a possible headache

I wouldn't think electrical tape would hold up to weather elements very well. But it would be cheap and easy.

ive had electrical tape on for lil less than a year with no problems..the trick is the heat from weather in a sense shrink wraps it to the trim making it very sturdy

I'm not talking about making it black, i'm talking about gunmetal. I know the tape/vinyl exists, thinking of something different. Thoughts?

I think the gunametal paint may blend too much with your DG, causing the window to look smaller, but who knows. I used plasti-dip on my old Passat, and it has held up GREAT (my brother currently owns it).

Plasti-dip FTW!! But if you go Gunmetal, I wanna see pics! GL!

Re: Painting chrome window trim Gunmetal?

if it were me I would definitely go the Plasti-Dip route. I'm impressed how it's held up on the grill trim. Window trim wouldn't take 1/4 of the abuse grill trim does.

    x2 ^^

Every exterior mod ive ever done, ive used a heavy clear coat..usually a high temp gloss effect..
i think it can be done and look good but you have to be super careful with after spray, mask off your car well..and GL!

Re: Painting chrome window trim Gunmetal?

All I have heard. Is that paint will not stick to our trim worth a damn. Maybe after you sand it, and use some self-etching primer. I have heard plasti-dip is a homerun. But of course no gun-metal.
