Bleeding air from the coolant system/air bubble in the coolant system

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I finally got everything back together, car runs well, etc.

I was only, however, able to get 4L of coolant (2L coolant 2L water) into the system. There must be air there somewhere, how do I bleed it? I ran the car until warm with the cap off the reservoir and its still sitting as is.

    Thoughts?

Re: Bleeding air from the coolant system/air bubble in the coolant system

2.8 1.8? there are a couple bleed spots. i only know the ones for the 2.8.

the lines that go to the heater have the highest bleed spot and might be on both the 1.8 and 2.8. there are two lines and one has a very small hole in it. if you take a vise grip and pull the hose clamp down and slip the hose down just a little bit while keeping it on the line going into the car you should be able to bleed the system

    i'll work on finding pics

I dont know if this will help, but i might. Squeeze the upper radiator hose/massage it to get some air out.

if you lift the reservoir in the air it helps get some of the bubbles out too

turn the heat on and run the car for 15-20 minutes with the cap off.

it will bubble so be ready too add coolant if needed.

Here is a snippet from the Bentley manual. It has a section describing how to fill the coolant and bleed all the air out.

Re: Bleeding air from the coolant system/air bubble in the coolant system

    thanks!

it mentions raising the reservoir 100mm so i will do that. it also mentions a bleeder hole where the coolant hose meets the heat exchanger...where the hell is that?

Re: Bleeding air from the coolant system/air bubble in the coolant system

i used the method in the link above and it now has 6L in it (3L water, 3L coolant.) I am getting coolant out that little bleeder hole so my bubble is obviously not there.

i tried turning the heat on but no more coolant is being taken in, and now I get an overheat warning after about 5 minutes of idling. (temp gauge is still at 90* though.)

    any thoughts guys?

Re: Bleeding air from the coolant system/air bubble in the coolant system

also, if i remove the water pump drain plug there is coolant there, leading me to believe the issue is not with the thermostat...does that make sense?

Just searching around the interwebs. Here is the rest:

    http://www.pvv.org/~shane/stasj/pics...sjon/A4-S4_B5/

I actually have the bentley manual on CD, but its the old version. For the life of me I can't get the thing to work right. Working on exchanging it for the newer one.

BTW, what year is your A4? I thought the AEB had a coolant bleed screw somewhere. I know my AWM doesn't have it, just the bleed hole in the heater hose. I've actually never used it, it always drank back whatever I got out of it and I never had a problem.

Make sure you have the level sensor hooked up to the bottom of the resiviror, that will trigger the light, your coolant temp switch could be out

this was my problem. the system was actually full, but the tank was almost empty to the when i tilted the reservoir up, it was triggering the sensor to flash the coolant light.

    all is well.
