what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    1) What are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

    2) How would the car run?

    3) Would a blown turbo effect the car's rpm's at idle?

    4) Would there be any kind of sound?

    5) If the turbo was blown would it still have vaccum? If so how much?

    6) Also, how would the car run if you disconnected the dv or had a broken dv?

    Thanks guys

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

the good ol blown turbo eh!

Well you would loose boost infact no boost at all.
every time you tryed to boost you would get a stupid weuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu sound
you would eventually start to smoke badly out the back..

I blew my turbo a few months back and thats what happened to me.

yes you still have vaccum and it would be its norman 25 driving and 20 when idle.

with no dv your car would run like shit.. you need that dv to release the pressure.
with a broken dv you would get a hisss at higher boost and your car would just be flat out weak.

    hope that can help.

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

I can't answer all your questions, but I'll tell you how mine failed. One day the exhaust started smelling a bit oily. The next day I could see faint cloud following me. Over the next hour or so the cloud got thicker and thicker and the car started running poorly. It used 2 quarts of oil within 5 miles. Huge clouds of black smoke. Idle was bad and very little power. I don't think it had to do with boost - more likely it was because the O2 sensor was getting coated in oil. It was a failure of the journal bearing caused by improper machining of the center turbo housing - massive oil leak directly into the exhaust. Turbo lasted less than 5k miles.

Moral: Don't buy chinese replacement turbos.

Original turbo locked up. The nut came off, jammed and destroyed the compressor wheel. Note: car is slow when turbo doesn't spin, haha.

Solution: Rebuild original turbo using parts from failed chinese CHRA (shaft and compressor wheel) and a new journal bearing from gpop shop. Been good for over 10k now with no oil usage.

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

so if you had a blown turbo, you would pretty much have signs building up over time telling you that the turbo is going...the turbo wouldnt just blow all at once? I dont have any smoke, the turbo isnt making any weird noises, im not burning oil, i just dont know what could be wrong right now.

I think i blew my dv...because it was stock and i was running 23psi on it for a long time...so the car was running like shit and i took off the dv and it still ran the same as it did when it was on...ill have a need 007 wednesday to tell if that was the problem but im not betting on that.

Is it strange that the car ran the same with the dv on as it did with the dv off?

    Shitty mafs?

im thinking if your cars running shit and your MAFS is fucked then its not reading what the ecu tells it to there for your going to run like shit so having a big hole in your boost system wouldnt matter because the mafs cant register whats going on. It cant tell how much air is coming thru.. Check the mafs.. You will be running like shit.

i replaced the MAF. and still its the same.

when the car has the maf plugged in it idles ruff and drops between 700-1100rpm...when its unplugged it idels up to 2000rpm. when its plugged in you cannot drive the car...i mean you cannot give it gas no matter what...the car will not rev over 1200rpm. with the maf unplugged you can drive the car, but there is no boost...why is there no boost?

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

If the diaphram in the DV is torn it creates a boost leak. The car will not achieve the proper amount of boost. If the car is driving that poorly it has probably thrown some codes. Is your engine light on? If the boost leak is big enough it will trigger limp mode, limiting the car to about half the normal boost pressure on top of any other problems.

If you just remove the DV, you have created a huge boost/vacuum leak. I would expect the car to run very poorly or not at all.

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

yeah, thats why im pretty stumped right now. the car isnt giving off any codes or anything but its running really bad..its undriveable.

I can say that for the week or so that i had my setup running, when i would release the gas while in gear there would be a shock/jolt like the car is stalling. Now i heard that a dv if messed up or something can cause shocks to the turbo and can even damage the turbo. Once i found out that there were no more shock when i would release the gas while in neutral...pretty much figured that out my first ride...then i always released the gas in neutral to prevent a shock.

But why would the dv be causing a shock like that with the new set up? Is it because the set up was too powerful for the stock dv...and i ended up breaking the dv somehow which is why the car is now running this way?

Im seriously stumpped if you cant tell lol...and i need all the help i can get

i removed the dv and the car ran the same as it did with it on...what does that mean?

Re: what are the symptoms of a blown turbo?

I was driving today, and when I went to step on the gas to pass someone, the power wasent there.
it was still fast, but nowhere near what the S4 should and was doing.
I believe my turbos are leaking oil. I do plan to change them, but now its slow and my turbos are not making nearly as much of a spoolind sound as they had previously.
    Are my turbos blown?

if so, is it real bad to drive with blown turbos?

are you running a stock DV with a 2871r? even if your not I would just replace it, as soon as you even chip your car then older stock ones fail, get a 710n or a forge etc and see if it fixes it they arnt that expensive especially compared to a turbo.

S4 wide body- I dont know much bout the s4 but I would do a boost leak check first, also try asking in the s4 forum they will no much more than us

I do currently have the stock DV's in.
I have 710n's in my trunk I will put in this week. I hope that is the problem!
Its just sluggish now. Deff not boosting to what it was or should.
