Is it true that the cost to round out a bend in a forged wheel is somewhere in the $1000 per wheel range?

    ^Eagle-eye!

$150 per wheel seems really cheap ... If I knew that for sure, I'd jump right on them.

I asked the seller for more pictures. The one shown doesn't look too bad.

Re: Cost to repair forged wheels

At least 150 per wheel, even at that price the cost of the set would be expensive.

    $700-800 on ebay
    +$150 x 3 = $450
    +1000 for a 4th wheel + tax and shipping ($50)
    =
*Total price to a usable set is approx. $2200

~$2200 is still slightly less than someone would sell a used set for. Despite all the cons, the pro to this for me is that I don't have to dish out $2500 all at once. Instead, I can work on this over time. I might be more inclined to get them if they were a full set, but I'm just feelin' it out ...

They're ET32 by the way, in case anyone wants to know.

It doesn't matter, a bent wheel is a bent wheel. The same process applies. The tool the use is just a hyd. ram with matching shoes the fit the wheel size. If you have a 19" wheel, they use a 19" shoe opposite the bend and a 18"shoe on the bend to push it past round. That way when released it goes back to round. It takes some work a little here and there to get it right. I worked in a wheel repair shop for about a month. There's no real science to it.

Guess I've been hanging out in the B6/B7 S4/RS4 forum too much ...

When the time comes, I may come to you looking for a set of RG-Rs (what I actually want).

I paid $95/wheel for truing up forged wheels. And another $35/wheel for machining the lips (curbrash).

I feel bent or cracked forged wheels are junk, no matter how well you fix them. cracked is worse than bent.

    That sounds reasonable.

The ones I'm eying, are bent only ... But so far I've only got one picture to go off of. I asked the seller for some better pictures, so we'll see how badly the other ones are bent.

The seller did reply that he'd accept $750 shipped if I used buy it now. It's tempting ...

Re: Cost to repair forged wheels

Even forged wheels can get slightly out of round from normal wear and tear. Throw your wheels on a RoadForce balancer and you'll see. As it turned out my vibration issue turned out to be a cupped tire and not the wheel though.

dude i had a wheel repaired, it was $60 to have the crack welded and about $130 to straighten it. the place i go refinishes and straightens wheels for about $800 out the door for all 4. thats 3 acid baths to remove old paint, wash, fix curbage, bends, ect, then powdercoating.

^ I know, I went onto Ebay and looked for it. One thing from selling wheels myself, the wheels will always look worse that how the pictures present the wheels. best of luck

    true..

OP, think of it like this.. if the seller fixed them himself for $100 or less each and sold them as a set he would get much more $$$$$ plus he could just sell them as used forged wheels....... WHY hasnt he done that?

I can see both sides to this. Some guys don't want to sink more money into a set of wheels just to be able to sell them. On the other hand, he would definitely make a lot more if he fixed them himself. Keep in mind that you can also replace the barrels on these. You're all lucky I'm buying a house, or they would already be on the way to Cali.

Well, I did live in the UK. But then Uncle Sam decided I was needed in Northern California. I'm hoping to get my car to a showable condition and make it to some shows this year. I hit most of the big ones in the UK the last two years. GTI International, GTI Fest, Ultimate Dubs, and the GTI Spring Fest. Plus I made it to the 2008 Essen Motorshow. That was amazing, and I plan on trying to get stationed in Europe again after this hitch in Cali, if only for the wrecker yards and car shows. Oh, and what are you looking to get for your Sportecs? I'm still going with my ABT theme so far. I'm probably the biggest ABT whore on this board, but the car just doesn't show that yet. I have about four sets of ABT wheels, plus a couple sets of BBS. Oh, and I almost forgot about a set of OZ 17"s I have too. I think I might try to stop at ten sets. Maybe...

I paid $180 back in Feb to have my Volk LE37 straightened/refinished. That included unmounting, mounting, balancing, and filling the tire with nitrogen.

I think it was only $90 to have the wheel straightened but they have to heat it up to straighten it so it would look like shit if you didn't refinish it at the same time.

Yeah, I'd definitely get them all straightened and refinished all at once, and done right. If I weren't on the verge of going on vacation ...
