    Right Rear Wheel Squeak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My rear suspension in my Avant is not quite stiff enough or high enough to take a 4 passenger + luggage load without scraping the tires on the wheel wells whenever hitting slight bumps.

After a couple hundred miles of driving like this, my right rear wheel squeaks intermittently. Most of the time it will squeak when going straight or turning left, and almost always doesn't squeak when turning right.

Anyone have an idea of what may have caused this?

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Does it squeak when braking as well, or do you think you might have blown a shock?

    Re: Right Rear Wheel Squeak

Is it a squeaking noise..or a grinding noise?
My car makes a slight squeak or whoosh of air when it hits bumps. (I think that’s normal shock operation)

With that little piece of information I would GUESS that it is likely a wheel bearing. That is how my rears failed. Only thing I think is different is that it is not a squeak it is more of a grinding/squealing noise that comes and goes till it doesn't go away and makes it too loud to talk on a phone while driving. Then there is always the possibility of the wheel bearing itself just exploding.

Now I have a front one on the way out now too @ 105k

I have the same issue I thought it was my brakes.. Cause it happend only when breaking at slow speeds but this sounds more likely. Any website sell Wheel Bearings for cheap.

    Re: Right Rear Wheel Squeak

Strangely enough, today, after letting the car sit for almost 24 hours, I had no squeaking whatsoever. It was almost as if have the suspension so low with a full car and grinding the tire on the wheel well caused some friction somewhere else, but over time, the friction was released and was running fine.

Is it possible to get stiffer or raised suspension? I'm sure it is, but I have heard from a few different Avant people that they have the same problem, so that's what makes me question it...

When I had my 16mm spacers on the rear (17 x 8 35mm offset 235/45R17) with my Hotchkis swaybar my rubbing stopped. So that might help stiffen up the rear suspension compression a bit.

    Just a suggestion...

    Re: Right Rear Wheel Squeak

This same sort of thing happened to my gf's car. It was her left rear wheel. It just ended up being that her rear brake pad was so worn that a little piece of metal that stuck up was grinding. It didn't trigger any brake wear sensor or anything either. But it was really loud when she went in reverse, and was like a high pitched squealing sound going forward that you could barely hear unless on the freeway. Didn't sound like any noise i've ever heard brakes make, especially because it was constant and not just when brakes were applied.

Would a bad wheel bearing cause a vibration??

No it was definitely outside on the rear wheel, I had my passengers stick their head out the window while it was occuring. I cant figure out what it would be, cause I drove 500 miles with it squeeking, so I would be very surprised if it had something to do with something being stuck to the brake pad or something of that sort. I kind of want to get a bunch of people in there again and see if it happens again...
