    Thow-out bearing replacement cost?

    I searched...no info found

My mechanic brother-in-law says my throw-out bearing needs replacing (B6 S4 6-spd Manual).

Anyone have a ball-park estimate of what it costs for a stealership to replace one of these?

I don't want to go in blind and have them quote me some outrageous price.

Which they're going to do anyway...

    Thanx much for any info...

Throwout bearings are relatively inexpensive, It is the labor that will kill you... If you are actually PAYING someone to do this for you, you might as well replace the clutch while you're at it.

How was this diagnosis arrived at anyway?
(what's wrong with your car? -what's it doing / not doing?)

That's what my brother-in-law said...do the clutch too.

He was in my car for the 1st time and when I depressed the clutch pedal he said "what's that noise"? I said I dunno, but it's been there since I bought the car (3mos ago).

It's a weird kind of whine sound when the clutch pedal is depressed. Happens through the whole travel of the pedal and in all gears. Get's a little better as the car warms up, but is still there.

Otherwise everything is fine. Transmission goes in and out of gear with no problem whatsoever. There's no slip or grind or any issue at all.

A T/O bearing is around 70 bux, but labor wise your looking at the same cost as a clutch job. Trans has to be pulled to get to the parts, so while your there it would probably be a good idea to renew the clutch assembly.

That's dependent upon the time and labor rate the shop charges.
