My BAMFT AEB 366XL solid head drag chassis buildup

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so i am new here.... been pointed this way by a few regulars. i carry the name almost everywhere, its easier to spot me that way. my new drag chassis i am working on right now is going to be a monster.... it is being built to cert in the 8.50 class. the goal is 9 sec 1/4 mile. bottom end built by Issam. top end built by Joey @ DJM in Portland in case you dont know of him. SM4 tuned by Kevin "Lugnuts" Black. most other stuff internet sourced. all 034 parts supplied by Issam. exhaust manifold and downpipe, if you can call it that, was built by Jim and Brian of HorsepowerConnection in Lacey WA.

Jake told me to post it here, and make it good if i wanted half a chance to have it stay.

the car is now being assembled. and it is getting painted this fantastic looking deep burgundy-ish color. we may paint the rest of the car this weekend if its nice.

i read the rules, and i know it said B5, but nobody is going to see it in the Coupe Quattro section, and it is based upon the B5 motor (please let it stay).

anyways, if ya move it ya move it. how many people ditch the 20v I-5 for a 20V H(uge)T 4cyl?

some quick stuff to layout, then i will post a few pix. if you dig it i will put up more... if not, cool. i shared something...

AZG (VW 2.0L) block, 06A. ditched the 92.8mm crank.
    86.4mm Forged crank.
83.5mm JE pistons, coated and also with custom 21mm pins.
    custom length Scat rods.
    Billet main caps.
    Block Girdle.
    034 coated bearings throughout.
    ARP head studs.

basically destroking the motor to survive in the 10k rpm range.

    AEB head, non ported.
CAT Billet solid lifter cams, 1003756.
    Supertech springs & retainers.
Supertech valves, +1mm SS Nitrided intakes and stock sized Inconel exhaust, single groove option on both.
    CAT solid lifters.
    CAT cam degree pulley.
    Supertech shim set.

basically getting prepped to rev to the moon, Alice.

    Fueling is custom fuel cell.
    two Bosch Motorsport 044 pumps.
    all SS braided lines.
    Race-Craft Fabrication Fuel rail.
    Bosch 1600cc injectors.
    E85 fuel.
    BBK/Roush Racing 75mm TB.

Engine management is Autronic SM4, going to hopefully fly Kevin out to tune it if we dont do the remote link.
monitoring is all Stuart Warner gauges.
    NGK WB02.
2-step and gear based boost controlled by SM4.

Turbo is Bullseye S366XL. T4, divided inlet. 1.00 A/R. 5" inlet. 4" v-band exhaust, straight off turbo out thru fender by door. 3.5" Vband compressor outlet to AWIC.
twin Tial MSv 38mm Vband wastegates, open dump.
one single pipe for boost line. AWIC connects direct to TB.
custom intake manifold. INA backplate with our design plenum.
HKS SSQV BOV on the output side of AWIC.

all the engine bits are custom. intake, catch can, VC breather setup, fuel cell, radiator cell, all of it we make.

chassis is a 1990 Coupe Quattro. gutted, caged, suspensioned, all work done in that area by me. B4 CF hood. S2 rear bumper. Euro Cabby front bumper. half-tubed front end.

    suspension/drivetrain include 01E trans from UrS4.
all axles custom made by A1CVTech in Canada.
a full custom coilover setup built by yours truly.
    all solid 034 subframe mounts.
ClutchMasters FX 700 Twin Disc clutch setup.
motor and trans are solid mounts as well.
rear diff is hockey puck mounted, with Delrin rear mount.
control arms all delrin from 034.
all tie rods are swedged tube, heims end, made by me.
    Wheels are Centerline Convo-Pro 15 x 7.5 front and 15 x 8.5 rear.
    tires are M&H Racemaster 24.5 x 8.5 slicks.
full 10 point roll cage is based from my own design and bent by S&W Racecars.
    Maunal brake conversion.
Girling G60 dual piston front brakes with D/S rotors.
    Wilwood prop valve.
    custom SS lines.

i hope you actually read all that, and didnt skim to the pictures. but if you did, there is some stuff to see that will make you back up and read stuff.

on to a few pictures.... you gotta watch though, cuz i sometimes get carried away with pictures :)

manual steering rack from a Fox.
deleted the hydro brake booster, fully manual brakes.
    Wilwood prop valve, stainless lines.
slotted/drilled front rotors on Girling G60 two piston caliper front setup.

i run a 20V with a 35R in the drag rabbit. here is a few pix of the size difference between this turbo and a GT35R, if anyone really wondered how much bigger this turbo is. these are sitting on a set of 2x12's, BTW.

its a nice view, i wonder what the combined power output will be :)

and man, the front shot just looks mean as hell....

and some line work accomplished. also, cut up the turbo compressor housing a bit, fitting for the boost pipe.

yeah you would have seen it on MG.... the full play by play is there.... this is the bulk of the cool pix....

you guys dont want to see stuff like gutting interiors, engine bays, etc.

so far, seems you like it.

this car is in a class of its own. and since this whole build pretty much revolves around the motor anyways, may as well share. it all pertains to you B5 A4 20v guys anyhow... its all the same stuff.

spoke with Issam today. block is ready. i sent FW to him to have the whole deal balanced complete.

i am having the axles (stock and custom) and all my hubs/spindles that are @ A1CVTech crated up in the same pallet box. so i can SORTA save on shipping. still gonna be spendy i think.

will call Marco tomorrow and see what he says, when he will be ready. its going to be busy here when all that stuff hits, though. i will have to put the rabbit back in the storage with the Vortech SC'd MK3 VR6. they like each other, all alone in the dark there... freaky VW's anyhow.

Good luck with the build, just make sure you keep us in the loop for the progress.

well, i got the car in maybe July last year. it was delivered to my house with me never even having seen this body style at that time. i was working out of state until Feb this year. i would work on it like part of a day on every other weekend, or bring parts to the jobsite to build. like the coilovers, i built those after work at the jobsite. welded up the subframes, that kind of stuff. been working on parts and procuring parts since then....

it WILL be running this year. i do have two drag cars, the rabbit is up and running, just waiting to get it back out there. but since it has no traction, i built this one. the rabbit spins across the line in 4th gear, GT35R @ 36psi, 130 MPH burnout. thats cool to say once or twice, but every time its annoying LOL.

thats for the kind words. i try. it makes no sense to shortcut, i find everytime i have ever tried it bites me in the ass. like the OEM headstuds on the rabbit, with the 35R. lifted head @ 36psi on my first run this year. now Raceware headstuds.

we will keep this updated.... and thanks for the good words from all you'ns over here.... its good to be away from all the critics and E-racers/tooners that have never done anything but pick apart someone elses work. what i do, i do for fun, and to satisfy me. i am not a serious racer, my job is demanding at times and i dont get to go race alot. but i like to wrench on my cars, and i like to drive fast. last year i got 13 passes total in the rabbit, thats why i built this chassis. no changes to make to the rabbit so i figured WTF, build something that will hook up.

Re: My AEB 366XL solid head build

these come in stock around 3175 curb weight.

this one right now, as it sits, next to that 1800 pound rabbit, weighs only 1760 pounds. i do have some stuff to put back in, like axles, brakes, minimal stuff. i really cannot see 500 pounds going back in. hell, i can pick the front of the car up off the ground by myself, with the motor/trans in it!

not sayin i am a "huge friggin guy" (said in Boston-ese from the movie Boondock Saints) but i am not scrawny....

so i look to have this thing around 2300 pounds or so all said and done. maybe a touch more.

If I am able to get a enclosed trailer before this summer I will try to make it up to the Waterlands event.

they are solid billets. and they are for solid lifters. so double solid?

and Mike, that would be sweet ass if you could come up here, but horrible if you beat me hahaha. but it is a good track... August is hot though.

but i tell you, it would be an EPIC event if you did come. we could make it happen that we run it heads up :) that would be one hell of a video, and i have a great camera guy going to be there to film it. and Kris and Ken are coming from down that way, they do GREAT film work.

Serial Crusher, huh? i made a lil vid or two, i got kinda off-track and slipped into VORTEX mode. defending myself, with some "pix or it didnt happen" type challenge. i took the bait, of course.... thats where the "huge friggin guy" came from LOL.

I love the commentary on the vids.

Good choice on the quattro for this build. Quattro > FWD

Re: My AEB 366XL solid head build

yeah, some of you know my frustration with vortex and the 1.8T forum.... and it was not even there that it started. but it just hit me as the regular vortex attitude.... and i hit right back with "OH YEAH?".

it really helps that the tube-framed front end happens to have the cross bar at such a level and height that it is an easy(ish) pull. but still.... i will admit i flared a little.... there are alot of people that try and make themselves off as more than they really are. say they do things that they could not even dream of doing in reality.
