NYC: Window tint ticket...how to get away with it?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just got 2 tickets yesterday for having window tints at 20% in the front sides and 5% in the rear + rear sides.

I thought the rear was allowed to be unlimited %?

Do i just plead guilty and pay or what do i do?

Legal limit in NY is 70% all around if I'm not mistaken. You broke the law pay the ticket. And 5% is just unsafe for everyone. My friend is NYPD and if he pulls someone over for tints that dark he pulls his gun and makes the driver come outof the car. Cops can't see in they feel threatened by this and will harass you then

Yes i did, but MANY MANY others do it as well. When a cop pulls me over i make sure to put my windows down so he can see in, and since that was done, whats the reason for the ticket? He saw inside. 70% is just ridicolous.

you can have 0% on the back if you want

your not allowed anything on the front, which you said you have 20%, that is what you got a ticket for

its $54 if im not mistaken

ways to get out of it? go to dmv and they have forms that your doctor can fill out
doesnt mean you wont get hassled tho still

edit:realized you were ny not nj

I can see where the police officers are coming from, but at the same time 70% is a joke. I think the 35% in CT is fair, but it's still not dark enough for me saying it's worth it.

ummm.. i took pictures of my last car before i got it tinted... went to court the next day with the tint tickets and they reduce the ticket from 65 to 10..... then you have to pay for court fee.... i can't remember how much but each ticket was like 40 bucks... they get you either ways...

i tint it 35 all around on the Audi... cops never bother me, cuz the A6 don't get profile like that. hahahaha if i spot a cop car ahead, i'll just open the moon roof to brighten the inside... never a problem!!!!!

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW YORK?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New York, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used

get out of state plates.. i go to NY all the time with 20% all around and they can't do jack about it..

locally i open my sunroof as well (like mentioned above) it lets more sun in and makes the tint look lighter..

^This.....only a maximum of 30% of the light is allowed to be blocked by tint... so 30% and higher tint is legal. The higher the % the less light it blocks. 5% is Limo tint and is way too dark even during the daytime and keep in mind rear window does not include..the drivers and passengers rear door windows but the rear glass only. The link shouyld help below with NY state laws on tint. Coincidentally the car diagram is an Audi ..lol

I have the Tinted Windows Exempt Sticker on my cars. Because I have been getting a bad Sun Rash for the last 2 Years. So I checked the DMV website and followed there directions on possible Tint Exemption. There are only 3 ways to get it. One is for Sun exposure. You will need a Doctors note and the form and they may or may not grant you the exemption. I did receive it for all my vehicles though. A trooper pulled me over for Tints on the Hway, and asked me about the sticker, and seemed surprised that it even existed but he let me go. I think you should have had the sticker already. However, there is a form that you can get that states repair and removal of your tints and and where it was done. This can get you off if you date it properly. Precision Installations had a stack of those forms at there shop in Lynbrook on Merrick Rd. Good Luck!

This was a few years ago...

Go to a shop or have a shop write you up a receipts showing tint removal and take that to court with you. Tint tickets are "fix it" tickets.

We used to run 3% all around and 20% windshield and that's how we got off on it. However, this only works so many times.

Other than that, get a medical exception. The DMV do check those, if I'm correct. So make sure you're doctor is cool with that.

The eye doctor actually has to sign and fill out the Tint Exempt form you pick up from the DMV. You ask the lady at the window for the form, and she will grab it one for you to have your doctor fill out.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch
