I had an Alcantara steering wheel and just took it off and replaced it with the OEM leather one.

I prefer the smooth leather to the feel of the Alcantara while driving.

i know it doesnt look good thats not the point. i'm looking for the feel and grip you get while driving hard. the leather wheels we have can get slippery at times. especially when its like 80/90 degrees out in socal.

I think that would lead me away from it more than anything. That material has got to absorb about whatever it comes in contact with and would be hard to clean.

Most of the race cars that have that material the drivers wear gloves. I would agree that it would give you a better grip (which may be why they use them as well.) It might get a little funky from those socal days after awhile in a daily car.

Plus it would wear pretty quickly in the places you repeatedly hold the wheel. Wouldn't hold up well.

Re: can we wrap our steering wheels with this?

Yes, you could do it. No, it wouldn't be cost effective to do so. PM sandspeed on here...he had a B7 A/S4 DTM wheel for sale that has patches of Alcantara on it, he might still have it for sale if you're interested.

But otherwise, you need to take it so an upolstery shop and they would (I'm assuming) pull the OE wheel cover off and recover/stitch it with the Alcantara. Your best bet is to call around and see what the shops say

Or if you've really got cash to throw around, wait until one of the Alcantara wrapped Euro RS4 wheels pops up (but they're like $1400)

Chalk another one up in the hideous category - save your money for other, more tasteful mods and stop trying to make yourself think you drive a track car with sounds and interior materials.

My dads got a gt3rs with this alcantara steering wheel.. a few k miles and no tint and still no wear and tear or fading. His challenge stradale also had it on the steering wheel with no fade or wearing out. You just have to do a little upkeep. Putting a steering wheel like this on doesn't make you a "wannabe race car". Nothing feels better than an alcantara wheel.

I've had a few alcantara wrapped steering wheels in previous cars. You can't beat the feel and grip of them. An upholstery shop unwrapped the leather, used it for a pattern, and wrapped it in alcantara. They also added a little foam under the material to enlarge the diameter and cushion the feel even more. Cost was about $250 in any color alcantara/stitching combination.

The longest I had it on a wheel was about 1.5 years, no fading or appreciable wear even in Florida sun and no tint. I would expect that after 3-4 years you may see some "crush" in the areas you grab most. The rub factor of alcantara is very high, something like 10 times that of real suede. I wouldn't recommend a light color on anything you are going to touch often. That would get dirty quickly just from the oil and dirt on your hands.

If you do this, make sure you get real Alcantara brand material. Some people use the term alcantara as a term for any generic faux suede, but that is not the case. in my experience, alcanatara lasts the longest in durability and fade resistance. Plus it's not super fuzzy like other faux suedes. It has uniform, short length strands that don't look like a teddy bear. It's easy to clean too.

For those that say it's ugly and a waste, drive a car with an alcantara steering wheel and you'll see. No more hot or cold steering wheel, just soft cozy goodness Plus alcantara usually looks better in person than in pictures.
