For some reason, I was reading into the thread and ran by a post that Keith@APR put up about being able to read various things like RPM, Coolant Temp, Oilt Temp, etc... off the Climate Control.
I have never heard of this in my 6 years of owning a B5, and I do not recall ever reading anything about this in the past...so sorry if this is a repost.
Anyways, I did some digging and came across the following info:

None of the links pertain to the B5 S4 exactly, however I tried it on my car and it worked.
Here is the process:
Accessing On-Board Diagnostic codes
Press and hold the recirculation button. Then press the manual flow control up arrow. You should see a 1c. Press the temperature up ("+") or down ("-") buttons to select a code number. Then press the recirculation button again. The value should display. Press the temperature up or down button again to display another code.
After playing with it a little bit today, here are the codes that I came up with that are of any use:
17 – Speed in KPH
20 – Volts – Alternator?
27 – RPM
46 – Outside Temp Filtered in C
49 – Coolant Temp in C
51 – Engine Temp in C? Maybe oil temp?
Again, sorry if its a repost but I searched the forums in the S4 section and did not see anything so I thought I would share.
