Anyone know a good Dual Side Mount Intercooler

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking to do a dual side mount intercooler setup.

The only one that I have found is from Neuspeed, and its $1,000. That seems pretty steep to me.

What about an OEM one? Any ideas or input would be very appreciated.

Why not get a better performing FMIC for cheaper? Or do you want a dual side mount for a particular reason?

That was exactly what I was thinking. Performance wise and cost wise probably best to go with FMIC. If you don't want to see the front mount at all, then DSMIC would be a choice to consider.

Fred at ER said that he might be looking to do a SMIC for the B6 using one of his SMIC setups from his DSMIC kit for the B7, not sure if the full DSMIC B7 kit would fit the B6.

I love my DSMIC. its been keeping my k04 running flawless in 3 120 degree summers here in Arizona. Didnt need to fabricate my USP bumper, fits perfect. Also, it does not mess with your fog lights. I initially had the FMIC and it made my driver side fog light point to the sky.

that racetec GP is a unbeatable deal. I installed it and it fit perfectly on my USP, all my lights work correctly. NO trimming was needed. a FMIC will outperform the DSMIC or upgraded SMIC in every way.

if you dont want it seen, just paint the piping flat black. its cheap and no one will notice it then. you can anodize it if u got the $$$. but the FMIC just looks like a radiator to your average joe.

I'm about to pull the trigger on an upgraded SMIC like the Tyrolsport or Apikol. I've still got my original warranty, so I don't want my dealer seeing an FMIC when I'm asking them to fix my motor, CVT, etc, etc. Just something to think about....

Re: Anyone know a good Dual Side Mount Intercooler

I think he wants a DSMIC for a reason, it's probably because he doesn't want a FMIC showing up front. A DSMIC paired with an upgraded Apikol side mount should do fine for a stage 3 BT. If he wants to do 3+, then a FMIC is the way to go.

I used to provide them to German Driver (Scott), I did not want to sell them myself because I knew they sucked.

I provided them as a favor to help Scott get his company off the ground.

Honestly, save your money. It's not worth the price tag...I went with the Apikol first thinking it would be enough for my 1+ set up and ended up with the RaceTec a month later. $550 (Apikol) vs $770 (RaceTec), the small price difference is worth the huge difference in terms of cooling. You can do a search for one of my posts comparing the IATs between the two set ups.

Assuming you're already modded by way of a ECU flash (hence looking for upgraded cooling), if the dealer hasn't bothered you about that (unless you flash it back to stock programming), I don't think they'll bother you about the FMIC.

Better off buying a anodized black ER sport, they wont ever know its there unless they go looking for it. Plus if you need to take the car in to fix something you can always just pull the FMIC out and put your stock SMIC back in.

I was strongly considering the black ER sport, then I saw that it had about the same volume as the Tyrolsport. I haven't seen any head to head comparisons, so I figured the Tyrol is an easier install with less cutting. Has anyone used these first hand?

I have yet to see any SMIC work as good as a FMIC. This is because the SMIC is tucked up into the side of the bumper so there is very little direct air flow on the very small front surface area that it has, while a FMIC has a larger amount of front surface area and a good % of that is in direct air flow while the car is moving.

If their $799 SMIC is the same size as one of the ER cores for their B7 DSMIC kit, then it has a volume of 328 vs the ER sport of 351. But as I stated up above, the actual forward facing surface area plays a big part in cooling the air which is why its really hard for a SMIC to work as good as a FMIC.

    Front facing surface area
    SMIC = 73 sq inch
Sport ER = 117 sq inch
Which means the ER sport has 60+% more surface area that gets direct air flow. This is why nearly ever test has shown that a FMIC does a much better job at lowering the IAT's.

Re: Anyone know a good Dual Side Mount Intercooler

^ agreed! If the Tyrolsport SMIC is comparable to the Apikol SMIC, the IATs only get lowered about 20 F degrees (at peak). A FMIC will lower it about 4 times that amount, around 80 F degrees.

That is the setup on the BEX 190 PS 1.8T Euro Sport A4. Our AMB stock intercoolers are ~1/2 of the stock DSMIC setup.

According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the dealer can't refuse warranty because of aftermarket parts that did not contribute to the failure requiring repairs. Any aftermarket parts installed that don't effect a certain failure, are irrelevant, despite what the dealers claim. There are no engine failures that can be blamed on increased intercooler capacity, as long as the intercoolers are installed properly. Any warranty refusal must explain how the aftermarket parts caused the failure directly, the simple presence of aftermarket parts without a reasonable explanation using established engineering facts that clearly associate the aftermarket parts as causing the specific failure, cannot be used to justify refusing warranty coverage.

Sport ER = 117 sq inch
Which means the ER sport has 60+% more surface area that gets direct air flow. This is why nearly ever test has shown that a FMIC does a much better job at lowering the IAT's.
