    recommendation for sunshade

living in arizona we get a lot of sun, do you guys have a recommendation for sunshades that fit really well against the windshield? additionally, are there any materials/types that block heat and sun better than others?

    thanks.

    Re: recommendation for sunshade

My car sits outside in the sun at work so I'm going to need one soon too. I was planning to buy the one from the accessories catalog on the Audi site, but would love to hear some opinions. I had one of those that folds up into a small circle but it was such a PITA to put away.

Chrono, I'm in AZ too, Scottsdale. I just use one of the curl up roll into a circle ones like blake (2 piece), works just fine. I prefer to have one with a good reflective surface, and of course, get a ceramic tint, that should help a lot. Also when I take mine to Chandler for 5K service, they will program windows/sunroof open with remote. This way you can get a head start to get some air into the car as you're walking up to it (if you live here you know what I'm talking about).

Anyway, my sunshade fits over the mirror but under the visor (visor holds it up). Mine came from my old 4runner truck and is a bit oversized (two piece) so they slightly overlap. I'm use to rolling them up so to me that's not too much of an issue.

I've got the Audi one that rolls up into a tube. It's kind of a PITA to roll up and isn't exactly compact once you do get it rolled up -- but the fact that it perfectly fits the window is a big plus -- you really don't have to put the sun-visors down -- the dash and the A pillars will hold it up. Figured I'd need this when the Houston summers really kick in, so I got the dealer to "throw it in"...

If you could, take a pic of it from the inside and outside the car when you have a chance.

is the official audi sunshade any better than 3rd party ones (aside from perfect fit)? at $40 bucks a pop, it seems kind of expensive.

also, regarding programming the car to have the moonroof open with the remote, which button would you press to do that? Is it like a double click on the unlock button or something? I mean, i wouldn't want that functionality when it's raining outside.

Not sure yet but maybe theres something about that on the forum. I would imagine it's holding down for 2+ sec the unlock botton. Similar to the tail gate open/close function on the avant.

No you need VAG-COM codecs to enable this....its not hard to enable and takes no time at all but you do need the program.

My friend gave me his Pep Boys fold up sunshade, its deff not like the Audi sunshade, from the pics it looks 3x better then mine. But my sunshade does the job and I think they go for around $10...so its up to you. Pep Boys for whatever, Audi for legit,

    Coverking Sunshade

Audi was out of stock so I did a little research and found this one from Coverking... looks identical to the Audi OEM accessory minus the logo. Cost shipped to my door was 32$. Fits very well, almost too well, as you have to bend the edges a bit to fit it in around the mirror. Nice piece.

I've used a rolled up one from Heatshield, which is custom made to your windshield size as well, on my last few cars and I really enjoyed the fact that it covered the entire front glass. Since getting my S5, I went with the Audi one. Luckily I don't really transport anyone so it can get rolled up and thrown in the back seat.

I'm in the market for a good sunshade. Does anyone have any other opinions or experience with some that work well? Where do you keep your sunshade when you're not using it?

mine looks like the audi one, but doesn't fit as well. then again, I paid $9.99 for it haha. It's a little wide, so at least i'm getting full coverage.

Where do you store it when you're driving around? Just throw it in the back seat?

I keep mine in the backseat during the hot summer months and in the trunk the rest of the year when not in regular use.

(This appears to be the only thread on sunshades in the B8 forum, so I'll keep it going instead of starting a new thread)

To those using the OEM Audi sunshade, how is it holding up? I have one that I bought at Target a couple years ago and it's the accordian fold kind and the kind that uses the sunvisors to hold it up. Fast forward to now and the sun shade has lost its sturdiness and is flimsy to where it bends and the sun visors can't hold it up for more than 30 seconds.

I like the OEM Audi shade, but I'm wondering whether it will get flimsy like my current one.

    Thanks in advance, gentlemen.

Pretty flimsy after a couple years, but not to the point where it didn't stay up with the sun visors down against it.

Thanks, I just got one on ebay for $30 with free shipping, but I paid $$2.70 tax because I live in CA. For the rest of you, you can get it for $30 if you live outside of CA.

I think thats the same as the one I get for ALL my cars. I use the Covercraft UVS100. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy to install and remove. Folds up nice and is very durable if its not abused when not in use.

    Bumping an oldie...

Anyone have a sunshade that is more compact when stored? I know the OEM shade fits well when being used, but all the options listed here are pretty bulky when stored.

I use that kind in my GTI. Tried it in my A4 and the shape and size is all wrong. I'm sure there is a brand/size that fits our B8 perfect.

Just looking to buy once and get the best possible option. Price is a secondary concern.

Anyone have a sunshade that is more compact when stored? I know the OEM shade fits well when being used, but all the options listed here are pretty bulky when stored.
The Covercraft UVS100 is long when stored but it folds up quickly and is fairly flat. I keep mine behind the passenger seat and it works great. As long as you don't have rear passengers it's great. However if you have rear passengers (other than kids in car seats) then you need to either place it on the rear deck or in the trunk.

OEM. I roll it up tight and store it in the trunk when not in use.
