Screw driver will pop them out and yes, they push on.

I have two OEM sets available (non-S4 logo'd) if anybody needs them.

They are tricky little bastards. Be careful you dont want to pinch yourself. What you want to do is place one end behind the caliper as your going to install.

Grab a flat head and push the other end back to install it behind the caliper. The trick here is to keep your opposite hand in the center of the clip applying pressure to keep it from popping out. Once both ends are behind the caliper, grab a rubber mallet and tap the center so the tab seats in the brake pad properly.

Re: How to install caliper retaining spring????

Let me start by saying I rarely DIY (unfortunately) but having read all the write ups on this, I tried it today and it is E-A-S-Y. Took less than two minutes for each one, and I am not exaggerating. Flathead screwdriver to pop the stock one out, then wedge in the "S4" spring in by hand. So easy. Thank Christ I didn't let the dealer do it and charge me a half hour labor.

After giving my stock calipers a good thrashing yesterday with some brake cleaner and wire brush, the addition of the new springs makes the brakes look halfway decent behind the new wheels. It was driving me crazy looking at shiny, new CHs with shitty, dirty stock calipers behind them.

Re: How to install caliper retaining spring????

If you search "rattle", there will be a lot of posts. Here is my version from another post:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the pleasure of doing this myself this morning before a local car show... yes, I did it myself.

    Quick and easy:

    1. Use a flat head screw driver in the middle slot and pop the tab out of the hole. Do not pull it all the way out yet.

    2. Put a towel over the entire assembly (I learned this after the one side) and use needle nose pliers to pull the entire clip straight out at you. The towel should deaden the blow when the caliper flings at you.

    3. To reinstall, align the "S4" in the middle area and push the top part of the spring into position.

    4. Then push the bottom part into position.

    5. Finally, use the flat head and squish the little tab into the slot in the middle area.

    6. Relax and enjoy. Sorry if this is a repeat, I rarely do anything by myself and am quite happy I was able to do it.

I guess I got lucky. I just popped both off'em off with a screwdriver. There was definitely a "spring" effect but neither shot off with any real danger.

dumber question. The "TAB" on the S4 clip, do I jam that into the square from the brake pad or just make sure it sits on the brake pad clip? (the little metal parts on the back of the brake pad that pops into the caliper)

Yes, make sure that "tab" is seating inside the square.

I am apparently doing it wrong then because it is a huge pain in the ass for me. I need two screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer plus several minutes of cursing at the damn things.

lol for me too, it flew past my face twice when it popped off lol. However with a little bit of persuasion from a hammer it found its place.

Painted my calipers today and popping the spring was easy but putting new ones on was difficult (the old ones were worn and faded). When I try to wedge in one side, the other side pops out like a bullet. I decided to put a tie wrap on one end and that helped me push the other one in. The tie should not be be loose, otherwise it won't stop it from popping out. After that, rubber hammer the center to complete the install.

Put one side in all the way, use long flat to push the other side towards the caliper carrier then use a hammer to hit it all the way in. Worked for me that way.

I must be an idiot because putting that spring clip back on was the hardest lart of tbe whole brake job - and I still don't think it us seated as well as it was when I took it off (that was easy)

I think the S4 clip has a slightly different fit than OEM. You can see it if you align the two up in comparison. The S4 clip kept popping off before I could push the other end in, launching as a projectile. After gashing my hand, I gave up. Put the OEM clip back on, which was a piece of cake in comparison.

Just push the upper or lower arm in place first and press the center pin in place after that and bend the other arm in after that.. If it doesn't work just mod your old one like I did
