Might be a stupid question, when I shift my CVT automatic to manual mode, it shows 1,2,3,4,5,6, and 7 gears...do I have a 7 speed gear? Just wondering...

It's simulating shifts. A CVT doesn't shit, as there are no gears.

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

Yes you do. Actually CVT doesn't have gears, it's a chain going up and down a cone. So it's pretty much infinite. Audi just made 1-7 steps so it's logical to the normal user.

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

i think a percentage would be cooler... pretending to have 7 gears in my eyes is stupid. but then again having friends who dont know how to change a headlight or a brother who doesn't know where to jack up his car, i understand why audi would do it that way

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

The CVT on the A4 simulates 14 gears, 7 ratios for tip mode and 7 for s mode ( S has closer ratios than Tip ), while D is just continuously variable.

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

I wish there were 6 simulated gears for the Tip and S modes. Freaking 1st and 2nd are way too short for a chipped FWD. There needs to be a happy medium between the two. I have to be careful or I break loose and suffer from wheel hop.

Mine has 15 "gears" ..... counting reverse.

In my experience, there is no performance benefit using the simulated tiptronic over "S" mode, pulling off from a stop (where you would use the first and second ratios).

Wheel hop is the result of not having a locking limited slip differential.

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

You can have an LSD and still get wheel hop. LSD's have little to do with wheel hop. They can increase the limit to where it won't happen but they do not get rid of the underlying problem. If you keep turning up the power it WILL come back even if an LSD reduced it for the time being. It's a suspension problem.

Wheel hop is exactly what it says, when the wheels hop off the ground during acceleration.

    Re: 7 speed CVT?

6mt FTW I really hate automatic trannys, even dsg or cvt i know some people are gonna hate me but when it comes to responsiveness and control u can never beat having a clutch!! I drove a cvt audi and like u said it did simulate 7 gears . Kinda reminded me of my polaris ATV when driving in D , kind of like a very long gear
