Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

Does anyone have a picture of the location where the crank sensor goes into? I cannot put the sensor all the way into the hole, it stops at the first plastic ring before it even gets to the rubber washer. Seems to me that there should be something on the bell housing that the sensor mounts into. Here's a pic of a sensor with an arrow showing where it hits ans stops on the housing. I can push, slam, whatever you want to call it to try to get it in and it only stops at the first lip. If I try to put the screw in and tighten it the sensor will slightly go in on an angle, but to me it shouldnt be that hard. I bought the car like this not running and the sensor was never seated correctly. I replaced the sensor because of VAG reporting a problem which is when I noticed I couldnt seat the new one... I slightly held it away from the housing and the car started up which is the reason I think something is supposed to be between the sensor and housing..

are you going at it from under the car? i had to replace mine and shined light from up top after getting the bipipe off to see the location and it wasnt too bad to get to i had someone pretty much feed the extention for the 10mm socket and i placed it on and took it off and the other one went in just fine. hope you get it working

Did you have to use force to fully seat the sensor? When I install it I still have a gap showing.

no i did not have to force it in i know that i took the seal off of the old one and cleaned it and put it on the new one maybe that is the gap you are talking about. it should just slide in easily. i hope that helps some

What seal are you talking about? The sensor comes with the red washer as shown above and thats all I have..

The red thing you see is the o ring to seal the sensor. Lube it up with oil and get it in there you should be able to just slide it in without to much force.

Did you match the sensors to see if they are the same?

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

Lube will not do anything for this.. If I really force it the plastic lip before the oring bends in. Could I have the wrong sensor, or even bell housing thats been changed. The main issue is that I bought the car not running and when going over it I noticed the sensor not seating all the way. The PO told me he replaced the Crank Sensor and tested the cam sensors but he still couldnt get it running. I bought the car pretty cheap, had it shipped and looked it over once it arrived. I noticed the EPC light did not light up when key turned to on position so I swapped out the ecu with one thats running giac-x software. At that time I was able to Vag the car and got the G28 speed sensor fault. I ordered a new one and when I went to replace it I noticed the one in there was not seated all the way in but also noticed when I removed it that there were scrape marks on it and the metal tip grinded slightly. I replace it with the new one I ordered for a 00 S4 manual and then found out it seats the same way. I tried to start the car and it sounded different with the new sensor on so I know the problem was with that. I had my nephew crank the car as I was holding the crank sensor just before it reaches the oring and it started right up..

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

After messing around with it this weekend I noticed when I removed the plastic lip before the oring on the sensor I could slide it in more but still not all the way till its flush.. At that time when inserted all the way till it couldnt go anymore it was actually hitting the flywheel!! Just to be sure I had someone crank the motor and I could feel the sensor rubbing on the flywheel. WTF is this about? I seen a post on here from another member 10SecS4 about his reluctor ring separating, has anyone seen this problem I'm having?

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

Take a pic of the sensor in question and take a pic of the place where you are putting it. This way we could help you more. The only thing i can think of is that you have a wrong sensor and it's to long maybe you have a speed sensor instead of the crank sensor.

How long is the sensor you are installing? It should be only about an inch long.

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

i beleive from your desription you are putting the sensor in the wrong place because the crank position sensor that you have pictured above goes on top of the transmission and you have to remove the bipipe to get to it easier you may be trying to do the speed sensor which was a confusion in the thread that i posted up there. maybe that helps some

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

No the bipipe doesnt have to be removed to replace the crank sensor.. The sensor mounts just to the left of the driver side turbo. Right next to the heat shield, and also shows it in my bentley manual. I'll see if I can get a pic of it for yous.. The pic above is the crank sensor I have. I also have a speed sensor which is the longer one that mounts near the axle because I was sent the wrong part.

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

Speed sensor goes right above the axle and crank sensor is up more. It's on the tranny belhousing that one is a lil more though to get to and speed sensor takes about 6 sec to get out :)

Re: Having problems installing crank sensor, am I missing something?

This picture should help. Your trying to insert it into the wrong hole ;) Things can get tricky when you on your back balls deep into the transmission.

When installing a new clutch in a buddies car I did this but it only took me about 5 seconds to realize it as I had a spare transmission/motor right in front of me.
