EMERGENCY: In Belgium, what beers to buy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Tomorrow I'm driving back to the UK from my buddy's place in Germany. We spent Friday and Saturday at the Essen Motor Show and I stopped at a supermarket and picked up some great beers on the way down here. I will have a couple hours tomorrow in Belgium on the way to Dunkirk to catch the ferry, and I'd like to pick up some more beer. Apparently Uncle Sam will ship up to 500 bottles of whatever when I move back to the states, so I'm slowly building up my stock. I need recommendations on good stuff to buy a couple bottles of each, or a one liter bottle. I already have some Orval, Westmalle, Chimay, and several gift sets with three or four beers and the glass with them. Together I would say I have about 60 bottles already, including about 6 one liters of various brews. So what Belgian beers do you guys recommend that are very hard to get in the US? Oh, and I leave at 0800 Germany time tomorrow morning, so you have 10 hours to make your suggestions. I will post plenty of pics, both of the show and the beers, and anyone in Northern California may just get some free beer after I move there in March. Thanks in advance.

Grab a couple big bottles of Tripel Karmeliet, you won't regret. Don't forget Leffe, that's a must have as well.

Re: EMERGENCY: In Belgium, what beers to buy?

Already got plenty of Leffe, and the store on base sells it in England. Trippel Karmeleit is pretty good. It was the first real Belgian beer I had many years ago.

check out the traditional Trappist beers made by monks:
    Chimay
    Orval
    Achel
    Rochefort
    Westvleteren
    Westmalle

or you can try the Lambic beers including Gueuze.
    My favorite is Cantillon.

Lots of beers to choose from but so little time...good luck

I had the best beer of my life at a bar in Brussels, it was a local brew and can't remember the name, but you cant go wrong with Belgian beer

if you have time, stop in for a couple beers at Delerium bar if youre passing through Brussels, its literally got a ton, like 2000+

Gotta go unpack my trunk now. Got something like 80 single bottles and 15 .75l bottles, plus 8 glasses, maybe more. Went to the Bier Tempel in Brussels and a beer store in Warenton. Both places gave me free stuff. I'll get some pics when I unload and get a minute to relax.

Definitely. Went last year and it was a great start to the season. Unfortunately, my car will have to be shipped back to the states before then, so I'll be riding with a buddy. I'd definitely be down for trading some beer for whatever when you come up.

EDIT: I'm uploading approx. 1600 pics right now of the Essen show and some other stuff, so this may take a while before I can get the beer pics up here.

Schoenbrau was delicious, and that French beer, Nordik Gold, was very very good. The Duvel, Kwak, and Fischers were also excellent. I still have a bit of that stuff left too. Haven't even touched ther Krieks. Maybe I'll get all of it together and take a pic or two.

Nice to know someone else out there can sit and enjoy a Rodenbach or two back to back. My friends and family think I'm weird, lol. I just enjoy that wow experience.

Drooling... I envy you my friend, this is a great collection of beer, please make sure you're sober enough to savor them all.

I hope you got a Kwak glass, that beer it's not the same without it :-)

If I may suggest an American beer, I think you should try the Dogfish Head 120 min IPA. Unfortunately we can't buy that here in NC due to the high alcohol content, a whooping 21%. it tastes like haven, if you love hops.

drink responsibility. If you're driving, don't drink; if you're drinking, give me a buzz.

    Me likey Rodenbach
    2002 A4 TQMS
    Motoza 1+ w/Genesis 380s, 034 HFC, K&N drop-in, 710N, Neuspeed snub, StopTech SS lines w/Hawk HPS, Conti DWS, full Votex, Pioneer FH-X700BT, DDM 35W 4500K HID

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

Ha, thanks but I'm hard to offend. Is that really true? A Flemish sour is a ladies' beer? Wow, learn something new every day. Are you sure it's not the Redbach or is it all the Rodenbachs including Grand Cru? I actually want to know more about this, lol.

I was surprised to learn that Warsteiner was like the budweiser of Germany because I like that, too. It's a nice beer.

Re: EMERGENCY: In Belgium, what beers to buy?

I'm enjoying a tasty ice-cold Grimbergen blond right now. Tomorrow I'm off to a friend's place with the .75 of Westmalle Double and a few others to work on our cars and enjoy some good beer. And I like Warsteiner too, but only on tap.

TDI: Definitely do PM me. Know anyone that wants US spec Xenons or a US boot lid?

Wow, that sounds nasty at first. But coming from Belgium I don't know why I'm surprised by beer mix drinks.

I used to work with a girl from Belgium (no she was not hot), the only thing I remember is "Hoe gaat het?" (not sure if it's spelled right though) :-)

Re: EMERGENCY: In Belgium, what beers to buy?

Sorry, but no US avant trunks. I would have to source you one from the US and then get it shipped here. I'm positive that I could not fit one through the US Post Office, so it would be expensive. Have you talked to anyone in the US about them buying a US spec one, shipping it to you, and then you shipping your Euro one to them?
Oh, and I'm drinking a Leffe 9 right now. I <3 Belgian beer.
