    Tires for 18 x 8.5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently picked up a set of 18 x 8.5 RS6 reps. I have a set of 225/40/18s lying around. Wondering if this will be too narrow for the 8.5 width rims and the C5 body. Dont really want to spend the $$$ on new tires - want to know if I can get away with using the 225s.

    Thanks

    Re: Tires for 18 x 8.5

I just got a set of 18x8 RS6 reps and shod them with 235/40/18 shoes. They look spot on - no tire overhang from the wheel and the sidewalls are not too pulled towards the centerline, either. Your 225 section tires may not even fit on the 8.5" wheels. Check discounttire.com and tirerack.com. I think one or both of those sites has a tire/wheel fitment guide that could clear it up for you.

235 or 245?? Really?! I used to run the same 225 tires on my Lexus 18 x 8.5 (FR) and it was fine - didnt look stretched at all. I am just worried that they will look really narrow and small on the A6.

    Re: Tires for 18 x 8.5

Well the stock 16s use 215, 17s use 225s, and the 18s 235s and having an 8.5" wheel myself I have 245s or you can use 235s (better for winter). I think you will be stretched but it is doable. It depends on what you want really

    Re: Tires for 18 x 8.5

Stock 16" wheels on the A6 use 215/55/16 tires.

Stock 17" wheels on the A6 use 235/45/17 tires.

225/40/18 would be for an A4/S4.

235/40/18 would be for an A6.

235/35/19 would be for an A6.

You are keeping a 235 circumfrence but reducing the sidewall for the extra wheel size.

The difference is that 225 will make your speedo read +1 MPH. 235 will read -0.2 MPH. You'll also have a tad more sidewall to help prevent bends in the wheels.

Don't know what kind of car you are in , but on the allroad most people are running:

    225/55 17"
    245/45 18"
    245/40 19"

    hope this helps

Here is a little size compare thingy that may help you.

    http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp

My stock 16x8's on the 4.2 were supposed to have 235/50 but no one makes that now. So I have to use 225/55 and they aren't stretched at all. I know its not the same, but I'm just saying. Overall I think you would be fine. I actually have the same exact issue. I have a set of RS6 reps I was going to throw some 225/40's I have laying around on. Proper size would be the 255/35, but its not that big of a difference. Compare it on that thing I linked you to.

Could you take some pictures of your wheels and tires on the car? Also, can you post your offset when you post? I have 245/40/18 tires and I'm planning on going with an 18x8.5 offset 35 wheel (I think, can't decide). I want to see how it fills the fender (I guess it really doesn't matter too much since you have an A4 and I have an A6) just curious. Thanks!

    Re: Tires for 18 x 8.5

my stock 17 bbs' came with 225/45/17. personally i think you could get away with it on 8.5 but it would stretch a bit. i would run 235s, its perfect on an 8.5. i ran 245 on a 8.5 and they looked a bit beefy, 235s look perfect imo

    Re: Tires for 18 x 8.5

225 vs 235 is 1/3" difference -- you'll be fine (225 = 8.85" on 8.5" rim), albeit not quite right rolling diameter; and when they wear out, move up to 235s. It will be ok on the rim, etc.

Why not try to sell the tires ("found" tires = "found" money)? sell them to somebody with 18x8 rims and put $ toward new 235s

I figured 235s would be optimal for 8.5 width wheels, but its just a matter of me using what I have. I would consider selling the 225s that I have and putting them twds a set of 235s but its a pain in the ass and I think the bad economy is making it hard to find buyers. I just dont want to deal with the hassle of buying /selling.
