    Has anyone quit smoking?

I think I remember a few of you mentioning you'd quit?

I'm on the patch, been wearing it for about 9/10 days. The first few days I was shaking and having constant panic attacks... all of that is getting better but I'm still pretty irritable and feeling like I need to smoke. Yesterday I felt like I needed one and took one from my brother, attempted to smoke it and actually didn't enjoy it at all . I'm sitting here right now rubbing my nicorette patch (praying to fucking allah that it releases more nicotine), about to pull my hair out, and taking huge deep breaths. Tell me this gets "easier" real soon. Or what helped you to get through this faster/past this point.

Edit: I can't really think... it's only been about 5/6 days.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

Well everytime I quit smoking, I just went back to chewing Copenhagen. I am actually attempting to quit the chew right now. Today is day one. So far not too bad, but I have noticed that I want to "snack" alot more. It's real easy as long as I am not around people that partake in such activities, but that is impossible while I am at work. I will probably start smoking again and continue on this neverending circle of nicotine.

Good luck and make sure to update your progress and the things that helped you make it through.

^For reals? I was actually reading up on that stuff. If this didn't work I was going to go to the doctor and see what he suggested. I originally wanted to do the nicorette inhaler but was advised against it... I guess you can get addicted to that as well.

Yay for day one. That's the worst, haha. Althought today was pretty fucking bad and comparable to my day 1. I hear you on not being around people that for me smoke (for you, chew). My brother is just quitting today which will make it easier, hopefully. I probably went overboard on trying to stop (my suggestions--->): I've been eating ice cubes like crazy (even crazier than normal), chomping on gum non-stop, I made a list of why I don't want to smoke, and I know the times when I smoked the most or it was a pattern smoking time (after sex, after a meal, first waking up, etc.) I make sure to do something right after or get out of the house. All of that stuff has definitely helped.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I smoked from when I was about 12 up until I was 24. I had tried quitting a couple of times; the longest I had quit for was three months until I finally quit for good. What finally helped me quit was getting sick with mono and tonsilitis, I was pretty damn sick and smoking a cig didn't even occur to me. After I got better I didn't even want to drink coffee let alone smoke a cig.

Good louck with quitting. Not smoking is fantastic!

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

my gf was a two-pack a day chimney when I met her and she swore she'd never quit. I think she smoked for 10 years.

one day in 2003, she quit cold -turkey (she say's that she quit so I would like her more ) and turned to tic-tacs. I think the first few days were the worst. She also started exercising regularly too which helped her focus the nervous energy.

Now when she hangs out with a friend that smokes, she'll bum a few but the taste and smell eventually (5-7 cigarettes) turn her off to the habit.

She has also realized how bad smokers smell and it's a big turn-off to the habit as well.

I know it sucks. Good luck

I quit by rolling my own cigarettes. Eventually I just stopped. Rolling your own reduces the availability that packs offer. I dunno, it worked for me...

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I personally haven't smoked, but my dad used to smoke like 2 packs a day back in Bulgaria. Than once we came here to the US, he just said I'm gonna stop smoking and stopped. Without any patches, gums or any of that shit. If you really want to stop, you will. I know others who have done the same thing.

Just calculate how much money you can save from not buying smokes. Then think of how many purses/shoes you can get with that money. Smoking is disgusting anyways.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

Just thought I'd chime in. My last smoke was May 23rd 2007. I had been smoking for 18 years (averaged a pack a day and slowly was increasing). I decided to go "cold turkey" because I ususally trade one thing for another. My boss tried the Chantix, and said it was the shiznet. My wifes co-worker who chain smoked for at least 30 years tried Chantix over 2 years ago , and hasn't had one yet. I have to agree with what someone else posted earlier, you have to WANT to quit in order for it to happen (whether its "cold turkey" or with medication). The first 2-3 weeks were horrilble. I avoided everyone that smoked.
Now i have no problem being around it. My main reason for quitting was, I could really feel my health decreasing, especially in the morning when waking up. I'm a husband and a father of two beautiful girls. I'm 33, and it was pretty embarrasing to become "winded" while trying to teach my oldest daughter to ride a bike. I seriously felt like I was going to pass out trying to keep up with her. I'm also saving on the average of $170-180 a month. Sorry for the rambling, but it's all true. One more thing.....Checkout the lung timeline on "mytimetoquit.com" I was impressed. Good luck and keep us posted!

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I used to smoke for about 10 years before quitting. One day I said to myself that I would quit, and quit cold turkey. You have to want to quit to be successful. Its been a year since I quit, and I dont have the urge at all.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I definitely know I can, I have before... for 6 months. It was about 4 years ago and definitely not this hard. I've also more or less been smoking for 10 years. A pack a day for 7 years and 2 packs a day for the last year. I started to realize the health thing too. I just started running recently and almost died at the end of a mile. My body could have gone for a lot longer, my lungs were about to collapse. I got tired of the smelliness as well. I think it's pretty much the same reasons for anyone that wants to quit.

Chantix sounds amazing. If this doesn't get easier within the next few days, I'll probably give it a try just to take the edge off.

And thanks people :) It's nice to hear from people that did it.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

Chantix just makes the desire to smoke go away. If you do smoke, it makes the cig taste terrible. The medicine is cheaper that buying cigs also. So there is no reason you shouldn't try it.

I stopped with my cousin and his gf at the time. No nicotine weaning stuff but the combined willpower of the three of us in one flat. I still have one when I'm pretty bent at a bar or club sometimes but never went back to the things regularly.

Nicotine is powerful stuff, but you Can quit the damn things.

    RE:rolling your own
I remember my uncles neighbor in Florida quit tobacco and took up smoking weed full time. He is a major airlines ground engineer. True.

One never quits smoking cigarettes. It's much like alcohol. You're always a recovering ex-smoker.

I hate smokers/cigarettes, it stinks up your clothes, you smell like an ashtrey and makes your car unbarable for others if you smoke in it, nuff said. Good for you for wanting to quit, it's a waste of money and the kicker it is killing YOU and ME when im around you. Im so glad that zero of my closer friends smoke going out to like over 10 people.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I smoked for about 6 years, quit cold turkey. I moved from PA to NC, and at the time had no job, so I couldn't afford them. And I had wanted to quit, so that kind of pushed me. I've had a couple since then, it's been about 12 years since I quit, but I've never falled back into the habit. I do smoke cigars now, but I try not to inhale them. I actually smoke them for the taste, because some cigars are just incredible. It's easier for some people, and harder on others. It depends a lot upon your personality. Some people need a crutch to lean on, some people are "stronger". Use whatever it takes to break the "habit" (sorry, I don't believe in addictions). You'll be happier in the long run.

You just have to do it right... I smoke 2 packs a day and 1 pack is in my car... I leave no ashes behind, nor any burn marks. I don't keep the butt's in my car either... Here is the funny thing... My mother and wife both don't know that I smoke but when they get in my car, they tell me it smells like a new car! Every new person I ask that get's in my car, I ask if they can smell it and they have all said no... No one knows I am a smoker because they cannot smell it... I might have a "slight" smell of cigs on the breath but that is all... Clothes don't stink, after every cig I wash my hands.... Also, an engineer that I worked with, he has smoked 2-3 packs a day since he was 16 years old... He is now 98 and still in great health... George Burns constantly smoked cigars and lived to be 100... And I don't think he even died from any tabacco related illness.... I am not saying it's good for you, I just don't think that it is as bad as people think it is... As with my grandma, she smoked a pack a day since she was 12 or 13 and lived to be 97...

Thats terrible logic. No offense, but with you always posting about having a trillion health problems, do you really think smoking is a great idea?

Sounds like you're 15 hiding your habit from your parents.

Also can't wait for the whining thread saying you have lung cancer and how you blame the military for your problems.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

I smoked a pack a day for thirteen years and went cold turkey a couple days after my ex-gf quit. How I quit? I rolled lots of tiny little joints and smoked one of those instead of a cigarette.

That was over 7 years ago and I haven't had a single cigarette since!

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

i've never smoked in my life, but from Ive heard from friends that the best way to do it is in "groups" or with a partner or just somebody else. Make it almost a "challenge" as to who can hold out longer. Better yet, make some goals for yourself, a 1month, 6month, and 1year goal, and after that, if you've truly not touched one, you probably shouldn't want one, other than just wanting it to want it, not wanting it for the nicotine.

    good luck Katelyn!

p.s. Just keep it in the back of your mind how smelly you are when you smoke, how brown your teeth are, and how much money you waste when you smoke. make it to the point where you realize that smoking makes YOU disgusting.

forgive me if my info is garbage, cause i've never smoked.

That's impossible, bud. 1) Weird that you hide this from your wife. 2) Your mom and wife must be dumb, you cannot cover the smell of cigarette smoke. I would change my clothes, put on perfume, wash my hands AND scrub them with the rough part of a sponge, use mouthwash and brush my teeth and I could still smell it on myself with a "smokers nose".

I smoked for 6 years and quit cold turkey. I feel the only think you become "addicted" to is the habit of putting a cigarette up to your mouth. I still find myself putting pens to my mouth at work like a cigarette. Honestly, do some serious, SERIOUS research into nicotine addiction. Look up the supposed impact of 2nd hand smoke. Hell, look up global warming and find what out an idiot Al Gore really is. It's all propaganda to get us to buy patches and pills and inhalers and gum. Or to buy expensive "green" cars. I don't buy into, it's just my opinion that I've gathered from results from true scientific studies. Hell, if anyone on here reads Cigar Magazine, they had 2 very good articles recently that literally tear apart global warming and 2nd hand smoke. Just my opinion though.

    Re: Has anyone quit smoking?

so does this mean that a heroin addict only has a bad habit of putting a needle in their arm?
you have to believe there is some kind of physical dependency here, no?

i'm not bashing you for having your opinion, but i think there is always a physical and mental aspect to an addiction. (and that's just my opinion.)

maybe your "mind over matter" was strong enough for you to quit cold turkey.

i'm not one to give advise. never been addicted to anything (other than a man & that was physical and mental as well).
