    Question Lug Bolts Rusted On

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I finally got new wheels and swapped out 3 of the 4. I can't for the life of me get the rear left wheel off. All except one of the lug bolts are so rusted on they won't come off.

Any idea what I should use to get them off? I put some WD-40 in there to sit overnight. But maybe this is a job for that liquid wrench stuff? I've already tried a 4-way wrench + a rubber mallet with no luck.

Craftsman 1/2" ratchet, 3ft cheater bar, and something soft to land on when you break it loose. Use gravity to help you put your weight on that cheater bar.
Otherwise, I'd shoot for an impact, but you would've used that by now if it were an option.

yeah a breaker bar with an impact socket and a cheater bar then just bounce, jump on it. If it doesnt work get a longer cheater bar.

    Re: Lug Bolts Rusted On

Be prepared to break them...It has happened to me a couple of times now. One of them broke off flush and I basically had to scrap the whole assembly. The other one sheared the head off so there was enough sticking out that a small propane torch and a Craftsman Stud Extractor was able to twist it out...

PB Blaster. One of the few rust breakers that work. Wd-40 is like water compared to it. Spray the lug every half hour for a couple of hours, put a sleave over the ratchet of thick PVC pipe if u got any lying around, if not a breaker bar. Should come off rather easily.

    Re: Lug Bolts Rusted On

Soak them in PB Blaster. Reapply every half hour for a couple hours. Then put a breaker bar on a 17mm impact socket and slide the jack handle or other long pipe over the breaker bar. If it won't turn this way you'll need to take it to a shop and have them use their big impact gun to spin them off and then torque them by hand so you can remove them at home.

Rusted lug studs are evidence that the tires were not rotated often enough. Simple maintenance would have let your tires last longer and saved you this trouble.

It's been done before, but you are correct, it's not recommended.
