    Hi,

Can you shift from Drive mode into Sport mode while your moving? Will it harm anything by doing so?

    Thanks,
    Rich

No it will not harm anything.. it is just probably going to drop you from final gear to 4th.. it causes no harm whatsoever.

Sport mode will not shift into 5th gear, unless you hit the cruise button. gas mileage will take a toll.

    Yes.

But think about it, would Audi purposely put in a feature in a mass produced car that could cause damage to it?

All the "Sport" to "Drive" does is change shifting parameters in the transmission programming so it holds gears longer and downshifts sooner, basically so that your RPMs stay higher. Im not aware of it doing anything else.

Mine gets into 5th gear in Sport mode, without cruise.

The funny thing is that during my test drive the salesmen was the person who said I should pull over to switch from S to D. I thought it was strange as the tiptronic is basically the same thing & so is the paddle shifters.

Re: Sport mode to Drive mode on the Fly (auto with Quattro)?

When I was test driving A4s the salesmen told me to switch into S-mode when I was getting onto the freeway and needed to merge or pass. Aka bursts of speed when you need/want it. I drove with a couple of salesman and they all said it was fine to do it on the fly and even the Audi manual I believe says it is.

I notice the timing gets quicker and the Tritronic downshifts into 5 gear when I am on the freeway and use the "kick-back" mode.

Lol, I thought it was strange too (since my Passat GLX had tiptronic as well).

x3, since on Tips you can gear up with the paddle even when it's not in sport. Sport mode just holds the gear you selected longer before eventually making the shift anyway. That's the worst thing about "semi-autos", is trying to hold high RPMs thru a turn or something and having it shift for ya.

Re: Sport mode to Drive mode on the Fly (auto with Quattro)?

sport mode just has different shift points it revs higher and stays in gear longer, bad for gas mileage. i throw it into S if i need quicker off the bat acceleration. dont use it if ur not moving fast as like i said bad for gas mileage when it doesnt downshift as well as Drive mode

Re: Sport mode to Drive mode on the Fly (auto with Quattro)?

Sport shifts at about 3k rpm if you're being leisurely and 3.2k rpm if you're giving it a little bit of gas. It will go into 6th gear on its own, at about 78mph+ or if you hit cruise control. If you manually shift Sport to 6th gear using the paddles it will remain in 6th gear when it reverts to automatic mode until you go below 65mph or try to accelerate.

However, now that I got an ecu flash I prefer regular old Drive more since I notice more low end torque. And when going for a pass it seems more willing to downshift since 2500rpm is right where the engine starts to pick up now.

On a semi related note. I was playing with the paddle shifters & I couldnt figure out how to get them back into "regular" non shifter mode. On the VW I test drove, you held the paddle for 3 seconds & it went back into regular mode. My A4 doesnt do that.

Sport mode also locks the torque converter opposed to where D does not.

I believe its in the man, but I'm not 100% sure, I know on the GTI my friend has, if you just leave it when you stop, if it's still in Drive, it'll switch off paddle mode

The tranny will return to whatever shift mode you have selected after roughly 15 seconds. There's no way of forcing the switch quicker through paddle manipulation. Only thing you can do is either go from Drive to Tip and back to Drive quickly or from Sport to Drive to Sport.

Ahh, its not in the manual but thats what I have been doing (paddle to tip to D). I guess thats the proper way to do it!

My salesman shifted into S while I was test driving the A8 and I've done it several times. Definitely isn't a problem.
